Herman Arthur Edgell

Herman Arthur Edgell, 75, of 1179 Brush Road, Marietta, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born April 17, 1933 in Coal Run to DeCosta “Ike” and Clara Miller Edgell. He was a 1950 graduate of Beverly High School. He had worked at Shelly & Sands until 1963, and then was self-employed as a barber in Belpre for sixteen years. He was an active member of the Fairview Heights Chapel, being a special buddy to the pastor, and singing in the choir. He was the leader of the Blue Knob Express band and was also in The Tunnel Hill Band. He had a special ministry, playing music at nursing homes as The Lighthouse. Herman is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hahn Edgell, they were married on April 28, 1953; three sons, Tim Edgell (Cindy) of Macksburg, Sam Edgell (Sharon) of Little Hocking and Mark Edgell (June) of Marietta and a daughter, Mary Busch of Marietta; grandchildren, T.J. Edgell (Jennifer), DeLynn Edgell, Amy Powell (Michael), Matthew Edgell (Joy), Sarah Edgell, Josh Busch (fiancé Holly), Andy Busch (fiancé Meagan); great grandchildren, Danielle and Noah Edgell, Zeke Powell, Madelynn and Cate Edgell; uncle Darrell “Dutch” Miller of McConnelsville and his special dogs, Nya and Leah. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Brad Edgell, and uncle, John Miller. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Pastor Melvin Conley officiating. Theda B. Rowley, 87, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Harmar Place in Marietta. She was born February 13, 1921 in East Palestine, Ohio to Sterling A. and Jennie Guy Rowley. She graduated from a business college at Salem, Ohio, and was employed for thirty years as secretary in the administration office for Dayton City Schools. After her retirement, she spent several years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, then moved to the Vincent area. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Woolmaker of Canal Fulton and Delores Gates and her husband, Richard, of Vincent; one brother James, and his wife, Patsy, of Ocala, Florida; several nephews and nieces, including Tim Gates, Cathy Johnson and Donna Venham, all of the Vincent area. Preceding her in death were two infant sisters and sister, Doris Rowley Metheney, and a brother, Robert. There will be a graveside service held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2008, at Barlow Central Cemetery, with Pastor A.C. Smith officiating. There will be no visitation. Anna Kathleen “Katie” Mixer Carpenter, 75, of Dalzell Road, Whipple, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville. She was born June 30, 1933 in Lincoln County, WV to Frederick and Letha Carder Mixer. She was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and had attended both Mountain State and Washington State community colleges. She had worked for 33 years at AT & T, now Bell Atlantic, retiring in 1985, as a plant assigner. She then worked as a newspaper carrier for the Marietta Times until 1991. She was a member of Twin Rivers Baptist Church and the Telephone Pioneers. She was a champion pie maker and enjoyed cooking, children, animals, gardening, skiing, golf, bowling, and singing in the church choir. She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Carpenter, they were married on May 20, 1972; two sons, Donald Kevin Carpenter (Sarah) of Whipple and Steven Joseph Carpenter (Jeanie) of Whipple; two daughters, Becky Kirkbride (Michael) of Whipple and Brenda Handschumacher (Roger) of Kingman, AZ; eight grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Carpenter, Stephanie Stanley (Carl), Steven Joseph Carpenter, II (Justina), Donald Kirkbride (Whitney), Elisha Barnes (Cliff), Ben Handschumacher (Shoshonna), and Ashley Ullman (Brett); nine great grandchildren; special nephews and niece, David and Kevin Burns and Debbie Tufts, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Frederick and Charles Mixer, a sister, Betty Burns, and a great grandson, Austin Carpenter. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2008, at Twin Rivers Baptist Church, with Pastor Donald Arbuckle officiating. Burial will be in Salem Township Cemetery. A. Richard Stoltenberg, 85, of 106 Chippewa Dr. B-1 died peacefully at Marietta Memorial Hospital on Friday, August 29, 2008. Dick was born January 20, 1923 in the family home in Chicago, IL, the second of three sons and a daughter of Raymond W. and Hildur I. Peterson Stoltenberg. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Marietta. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Lichthardt Stoltenberg. Dick and Irene were married March 11, 1945 and were the parents of three children, all surviving: sons David W. Stoltenberg of Seattle, WA and Richard A. Stoltenberg of Phoenix, AZ and daughter Amy Stoltenberg Tulip, of Andover, MA and two granddaughters, Jyl and Erica Stoltenberg, of Seattle, WA and Austin, TX respectively. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Mary J. Coppock. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Raymond and William. Dick was a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in chemical engineering and a veteran of the U. S. Navy, having served in WWII. He was a director of the local Salvation Army, and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Marietta, American Legion post 64 and Elks Lodge 477. He also served as an official at local crew races and regattas from 1970 to 1985. He joined Du Pont in 1945 at Orange, TX and retired from the Washington Works plant in 1985. At his request, Dick’s body was donated to the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Memorial contributions should be made to the Ohio Nature Conservancy, 1504 W. John Edwin O’Grady
John Edwin O’Grady, 57, of 618 Front St., Marietta, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born July 28, 1951 in Marietta to George and Louella Faye Myers O’Grady. He was a 1969 graduate of Marietta High School. He was a chemical operator, employed by Cytec, previously, American Cyanamid, at Willow Island. He was a member of the Elks and Moose lodges, in Marietta. John recently became a member of St. Mary Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, taking his First Holy Communion on December 15, 2007. The loves of his life were his grandchildren, and his dog, Mason. He is survived by his wife, Carol Doan O’Grady, they were married on June 26, 1971; two daughters, Darcie Porter (Chris) of Marietta and Betsy Wood (Dave) of West Columbia, WV; four grandchildren, Henry and Audrey Porter and Hannah and Walker Wood; a brother, George O’Grady of Marietta, a sister, Donna Arnold (Tom) of Marietta and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass will be at 10:00 on Saturday, August 30, 2008, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Effie “Leona” McCutcheon, 65, of McCutcheon Lane, Cutler, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at Marietta Center. She was born February 10, 1943 in Given, WV to Cleo and Eva Thorton Smith. She was a 1961 graduate of Ripley High School. Effie baked wedding cakes and did sewing for people. She was a member of Bartlett United Methodist Church; OES #59 in Marietta and had been Grand Representative of North Dakota in the Eastern Star, and was Home Representative for the local OES district, and was a member of Waterford Grange #231. She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Johnson (John) of Waterford and Phyllis Denton (David) of Fleming; a son, Robert McCutcheon of the home; three grandchildren, Christopher Johnson (Rachelle) of Lowell, Brittany Johnson of Waterford and James Everson of Fleming; three step grandchildren, Angie Weeks (Joe) of Syracuse, OH, Justin Denton (Sara) of Dale, and Christy Denton of Belpre; six great grandchildren, Austin and Katie Johnson, Addis Denton, Daniel McFleish, Rebecca Taylor and Rylan Weeks; five brothers, Cleon Smith (Loretta) of Layman, Cecil Smith (Ramonia) of Guysville, Webster Smith of Bartlett, Albert Smith and Elbert Smith (Jamie)of Proctorville; two sisters, Elva Carter of Abington, VA and Goldie Young (George) of Bellevue, FL and many nieces and nephews. Scott Alan Clay, 51, of Marietta and Walker, WV, died at 1:45 a.m. On Friday, August 15, 2008 at The Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus. He died due to complications of pneumonia and leukemia. He was born on March 3, 1957, in Marietta, a son of William W. Clay and Jo Callander-Murphy. Scott graduated from Warren High School in 1974. He attended Washington State Community College for two years and received two Associates Degrees in Applied Science and Industrial/Design Drafting. In 1995 he attended Rhinehart Taxidermy School in Wisconsin, and thereafter opened his own taxidermy studio in Pinehurst, closing in 2004. He was employed for the last three years by Boy Scouts of America, Kootaga Council as Camp Ranger. He served two years as Camp Ranger at Camp Arrowhead in Huntington, WV. Scott worked formerly at Sir speedy Printing, Union Carbide Metals in Marietta, and had worked for 16 years at Johns Manville in WV, until the plant closed. He was a member of Marietta Elks Lodge #477, Nendawen Lodge #618 and the National Eagle Scout Association. He received his Eagle Scout on March 30, 1974, his award for Order of the Arrow in the late 1960’s and Vigil in 1974. Scott was very active in his daughter’s basketball career. He coached her AAU team from 1998 to 2002 and was a big fan during her high school playing at Warren High School. He traveled all four years with his family to see Ashley play at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL. Scott was also very active in his son’s crafting business where they worked together collecting "junk" and turning it into treasures. He loved fishing and exploring the outdoors and was very involved in helping Charlie’s Blockbuster store build fixtures and encouraged him to hit his sales goals. He is survived by his wife, Tammy Sue Hutchinson Clay, whom he married on October 20, 1979; son, Charlie and daughter Ashley Clay; mother, Jo C. Murphy, all of Marietta; and his pets, Milton, Jules, Sammy and Moe. He was preceded in death by his father; step-father, George W. Murphy; grandparents, Harry and Clara Callander, and Paul and Mary Clay; and his favorite pet and friend, Brandy. Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The Marietta Elks Lodge, #477 will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Abiding with Scott’s wishes, no formal funeral will be planned. Following Tuesday’s visitation, his body is to be cremated. Tony Eugene Wittekind, 38, of Strecker Lane, Marietta, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at his residence. He was born December 24, 1969 in Ft. Eustis, VA to Bruce and Patricia “Pat” Snider Wittekind. He had received an associate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State Community College. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Panama Conflict. He was a chemical operator and worked in drafting at Cytec. He was on the board of the Marietta Soccer League, where he was assistant coach for the Marietta Blaze and coach of the Marietta Chaos soccer team. He was an active hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed carpentry, making a set for the Marietta Premiere Show Choir. In addition to his parents of Waterford, Tony is survived by his wife, Gloria Gomez Wittekind, a whom he married on October 5, 1991; his two daughters, Sabrina and Mailina and his son, Anthony, all of the home; his brother, Tim Wittekind of Watertown, his sister, Myla Thomas (Doug) of Reno; his paternal grandparents, Don and Arlene Wittekind of Marietta; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Snider of Waterford and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Rondell Snider. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charles David Hilton, 42, of St. Rt. 26, Reno, died Saturday, August 9, 2008. He was born on July 23, 1966 in Cambridge, Ohio to John David and Lillian Ester Bates Hilton. He is a graduate of Cambridge High School. Charles had worked at the Days Inn and Influent in Marietta. He is survived by his mother; two brothers, John R. Hilton of Ashland, Ohio, Jack L. Hilton (Alice) of Reno; one sister, Lisa A. Mellinger of Cambridge; a close friend, Darren Edwards and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. Heidi Jane Petrella Bett, 70, of Chippewa Drive, Marietta, died at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at her residence. She was born in Steubenville, Ohio on November 8, 1937 to William and Jennie Margaret Darios Petrella. Heidi received her nursing degree in 1958 from Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Zanesville. She was a Registered Nurse for 40 years, for Marietta Memorial Hospital and Community Action Family Health Service. Heidi was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and The Red Hatters and enjoyed traveling, music, reading and was deeply committed to her family. She is survived by one son, Mark Louis Bett (Stephanie) of Dublin, Ohio; three daughters, Kimberly Ann Modie (James) of Westerville, Ohio, Lou-Ann Bett of Larchmont, NY, and Tina Marie Trombley (Mark) of Westerville; five grandchildren, Wesley A. Wiblin, Christopher Modie, Samantha and Alexandra Flamenbaum and Taylor Trombley; one brother, Craig Petrella (Anita) of Steubenville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis B. “Lou” Bett on February 27, 1998, and they were married on August 16, 1958. Her parents, infant son, Thomas Matthew Bett and sister, Beverly J. Barbara Ann Heckler Morbitzer, 70, of Second Street, Marietta, died at 8:10 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2008 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 27, 1938 in Marietta to Charles Davis and Georgia Hendershot Heckler. Barbara graduated from Marietta High School in 1956, attended Ohio State University and received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Marietta College in 1960. She married Edward A. Morbitzer, Jr. on August 24, 1961. They lived in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Vancouver, WA, Lombard, IL and Rockwall, TX before returning to Marietta. Barbara was very proud to be a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout Leader and a High School Math Teacher. She was the Math Department Chair at Rockwall High School in Texas. Barbara was a life long member of The Gilman United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 64. She enjoyed bowling and being a member of the “My Miss Red Hat” group. She is survived by her husband, two sons and daughter, Edward C. of Richardson, TX, Andrew C. (Megan) of San Carlos, CA, and Nancy Ann of Richardson, TX. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Charles D., George E. and Eugene C. Heckler. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at The Gilman United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Diann O’Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Robert E. Schornstheimer

Robert E. Schornstheimer, 91, of Marietta, died August 1, 2008, at Harmar Place. He was born in Syracuse, NY on April 20, 1917, the son of William and Freda Schafer Schornstheimer. Raised in Kingston and White Plains, NY, he was a 1939 graduate of Purdue University in chemical engineering, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and the chemical engineering honorary, later earning an MBA from Ohio University. After working for Mobil Corporation in New York City, he moved to Marietta in 1946 and was with the B.F. Goodrich Company for 36 years in various capacities, including Plant Engineer, Manufacturing Manager, and the last five years as Environmental and Safety Manager. An earlier marriage to Ruth McKinney of Marietta ended in divorce. In 1969, he married Nancy R. Badger of Marietta. An inventor at heart and holder of ten patents, he retired in 1982 when he and his wife embarked upon the RV life in the winters exploring the USA. Among civic activities, he was a past president of Marietta Rotary Club and 1974 United Appeal Campaign Chairman. In 1988, he and his wife moved to Brevard, NC for 19 years where he was very active in Waste Reduction Partners, an Asheville-based civic program using retired volunteer engineers to advise local and area companies on reducing environmental emission and waste hazards. The program eventually received national recognition through Parade Magazine. He also greatly enjoyed tennis and golf in both places and mountain hiking in Brevard. They returned to Marietta in early 2007 to enter Glenwood Retirement Community. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sister, Janet Mungo of Louisville, CO; two children, Robert L. Schornstheimer and wife, Mary, of Kailua, Hawaii, and Sally J. Schornstheimer of Chapel Hill, NC; three stepchildren, Cathy B. Riedel of Okinawa, Japan, Janice E. Badger and husband, Brian Keith of Orlando, FL, and David M. Badger and wife, Amy, of Columbus, OH; two nephews, David Mungo and wife, Merry, of Superior, CO and Kenneth Mungo of Kingston, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Family members will receive friends on Saturday, August 9, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. At the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. Edward Walter Smith, 70, of Aurora St., Marietta, died Sunday, August 3, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born October 25, 1937 in Queens, NY to Arthur and Saima Kahkonen Smith. He was a graduate of Gainesville High School and had attended the University of Florida. He had worked as a purchasing agent at Dover Parkersburg for the last 27 years. He loved collecting and building model trains and cars, woodworking building things and sailing. David Allen Rice, 77, of Cats Creek Road, Lowell, died Friday, August 1, 2008 in Marietta. He was born February 10, 1931 in Marietta to Osmer and Mildred Snyder Rice. He was a 1949 graduate of Lowell High School. He had served in the U.S. Army. He had been a truck driver for Shelly Company in Thornville, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Lowell Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Rummer Rice, they were married on May 22, 1954; two sons, Michael Rice of Marietta and Steven Rice (Tracy) of Lowell; three grandsons, Cory and Marcus Marshall and Tanner Rice; a brother, Donald Rice (Nan) of Scottsboro, Alabama, and several nieces and nephews. Ralph Junior Dick, 81, of Poplar Ave., Williamstown, WV, died Sunday morning, July 20, 2008, at his home. He was born January 6, 1927 in Williamstown to Ralph James and Exie Witt Dick. He had worked as a route salesman for Broughton Dairy for 38 years, retiring in 1987. Ralph also had been a contractor, doing siding and painting. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Ralph was one of the two surviving charter members of the American Legion Post 159 of Williamstown. He had attended the Norwood Methodist Church, and currently the First United Methodist Church in Williamstown. He loved spending time with family, cooking, making candy, and working in flowers. He enjoyed talking with neighbors and friends and exchanging stories of childhood. Ralph had many enjoyable days on his patio. He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Williams Dick, they were married December 16, 1967; their children, Amanda Spencer (Jim) of Pittsburgh, PA, Amber Campbell (Jeremy) of Middletown, OH and Adam Banks (Cheryl) of Beavertown, OH; his first wife Marilyn Ewing of Beverly, OH, and their children, JoAnne DeEmilia (Frank) of Pembroke Pines, FL, Terry Amos of New Matamoras, OH, Valerie Schmidt (Trent) of Newport, OH, Louise Holland (Everett) of Marietta, OH and D. He was born February 9, 1944 in Walton, WV to Willis Owen and Dorothy Eloise Looney Paxton. He attended Stanleyville School was a U.S. Army veteran. Rodney began working as a truck driver with Iddings Trucking. He spent the majority of his career as a crane operator for Marietta Industrial Enterprises. In 2002, he retired from Silvesco, Inc. Rodney was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Parkersburg. He was a past member of Warren Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, racing stock cars, and riding four wheelers. He was happiest when watching his grandchildren play sports. He is survived by his wife, Vera M. Pat was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served on the Board of Deacons; had been a Red Hatter and enjoyed time spent with her garden club. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #64, and the Alpha Iota Business Sorority. On September 2, 1956, she married David L. McKenna, who survives, with a daughter, Darca Dickson (Greg), of Marietta; a son, Patrick McKenna (Kelly), of Bradenton, FL; two grandchildren, Timothy and Kayla McKenna; a sister, Shirley Lutz (Clay), of Williamstown, WV; and three brothers, Ronald Kemp (Vivian), Larry Kemp (Judy), and Jack Kemp (Betty), all of Marietta. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, at First Congregational Church, 318 Front Street, Marietta, with The Rev. Linda Steelman officiating. Mary Louise Brown, 87, of Marietta, and formerly of Lowell, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Heartland of Marietta. Mary had lived for six months at The Woman’s Home in Marietta. She was born February 27, 1921 in Lowell to Martin H. “Marcus” and Inez I. Reed Moore. Mary had been a Licensed Practical Nurse, graduating from the Marietta Area School of Practical Nursing in 1963. She had worked at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Pediatrics for 23 years, retiring in 1985. She had been a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, AARP, Marietta Senior Citizens, and the Practical Nurses Association of Ohio. She is survived by two sons, David A. Brown (Jane) of Bryan, OH and John C. Brown (Margene) of Marietta; four grandchildren, Jason Brown (Heidi), Courtney Powell (Eric), Nick and Alex Brown; three great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Brown of Lowell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Leo Brown in 1976, four brothers, Harold, Arthur, Howard and Allen, and three sisters, Esther Carver, Ruth Swingle and Joan Walker. Kenneth Dean Patterson, 30, of Mount Tom Pines Road, Marietta, died Sunday (May 25, 2008) as a result of an accident. He was born June 6, 1977, in Marietta to Lanny Dean and Millie A. Brockmeier Patterson. He was a 1997 graduate of Marietta High School. He was a member of Elks Lodge 477 and the National Rifle Association. Kenneth was a Catholic by faith. Kenneth enjoyed hunting, riding four wheelers, shooting pool, video games and playing cards, especially Texas Hold’em. David Charles Schott, 53, of Whipple, died Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. Dave was a cancer survivor, but died from complications following surgery. He was born May 15, 1955 in Marietta to Charles L. and Elizabeth “Betty” Schilling Schott. He attended Salem-Liberty Elementary and graduated from Fort Frye High School in 1973. He had been employed at Marietta Ignition, Rech Farm Equipment, Marietta Farm and Garden, MIE, and Leslie Equipment Company before making his dream come true of owning his own machine shop in 2004. He was a member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Harriettsville, and also a member of the Salem Township Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed camping, deer hunting, and tractor pulling. He will be missed dearly by his friends and his family. He is survived by his mother of Lowell, his wife, Jane Ann Handschumacher Schott, whom he married on April 21, 1979; two sons, Douglas Charles and Curtis Edward (Sara Stephens); three brothers, Dan (Cindy), Donnie (Linda), Dale (Carylon); three sisters, Debbie (Dave) Biehl, Diane (Chris) Erb, Denise (Mike) Gerber; mother and father-in-law, Hod and Ruth Handschumacher; sister-in-law, Cheryl (Wayne) McAlarney; brother-in-law, Jay (Debbie) Handschumacher; many nieces and nephews and three great nieces. Herbert Gail Britton, 79, of Harrisville, WV, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 19, 2008, in Marietta, Ohio. He was born August 28, 1928 in Ritchie County. He served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Mount Olivet Masonic Lodge #3, in Parkersburg; VFW Post 3554 of Harrisville, and American Legion Post #64, Marietta. He is survived by a sister, Donna Britton-Smith of Clovis, CA; a son, Mark Britton of Parkersburg; a daughter, Penny McNutt (Jeff Kehl) of Marietta, and only granddaughter, Meagan McNutt (Andy Busch) of Marietta, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Mae and H. Wellington Britton; sisters, Belle Goff, Buellah Tanzy, Ola Nutt, Jaunita Hanlon, Sherawanna Wesley, and Eloise Risley and brothers, Hosea, Holmes and Lynn Britton. No memorial is planned at this time. His ashes will be taken to the Bethany Cemetery in West Virginia for burial at a later date. Dale Franklin Kernan, 72, of Virginia Street, Marietta, died Friday evening at his home. Born in Marietta, February 17, 1936, he was the son of the late Frederick and Gladys Ritchie Kernan. Dale was a 1955 graduate of Marietta High School and served his Mold Maker Apprenticeship at Fenton Art Glass Company, where he was employed for 45 years, retiring in March of 1998. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Dale enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing and boating. Also, any time spent with his family. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Surviving, are his wife, Leota Ullman Kernan, whom he married October 22, 1955, and children, Michael David Kernan, Jennifer Owens (Michael), of Marietta, and Maria Brooks (John), of Whipple; grandchildren, Sarah E. Roush (fiancée Jerry Klintworth), and Gregory Roush, of Whipple, and a great-grandson, Colton Klintworth. Also surviving are two step-grandsons, Dustin Drake, of Nashville, TN and Ezra Carpenter, of Lowell; two sisters, Melanie Ashley (David), of Veto Lake, and Elizabeth Whitney (Bill), of Raleigh, NC, and several nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his special K-9 friend, Joey. Dale was preceded in death by Kayla Roush, a granddaughter. He is survived by a son, Jim Anderson of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Cynthia Few (Jason) of Lowell, Chris Miller (Stacey) of Marietta, Laurie Anderson of St. Petersburg, FL and Amy Anderson of Tampa, FL and five great grandchildren. Larry was a certified Master Gardener, Eagle Scout, and had been an avid fisherman. Elizabeth Marian Strick, 97, of Vienna, WV, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2008, at her home. She was born January 24, 1911 in Lorain, Ohio to John Thomas and Mary Maude Foxall Barnes. She graduated from Lorain High School, and Lorain Business College. She raised her family and lived in Wheeling, WV for over 58 years. Elizabeth was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, and was a past president of the Wheeling Hospital Auxiliary. She lived the last seven years with her daughter in Vienna and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marietta, Ohio. She is survived by her two sons, Thomas (Sue) Strick of Southport, NC and Paul Strick of Bellaire, Ohio; her six daughters, Jane Crock of Cinncinnati, Ohio, Mary Beth (Bob) Lamb of Vienna, WV, Cecilia (Dr. Frederick) Jaecklein of Marquette, MI, Judy (John) Silvestri of New Canaan, CT, Margaret (Pete) Caputo of Bethel Park, PA, and Jacqueline Cherry of New Canaan, CT; 25 grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. Elizabeth was greatly loved by all, especially those who called her mother, grandmother and “GG”. She was born May 30, 1939 in Cornerville, Reno area, to Francis Andrew and Elizabeth Ann Lang Arnold. She was a 1956 graduate of Marietta High School. She had worked as a teletype operator for the Marietta Times many years ago. She was a mother, homemaker, and dairy farmer, retiring from the Gerken Dairy Farm. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She was involved in the YMCA and had volunteered at the Fearing Township VFD. Norma loved quilting, sewing, exercising, traveling, the sunshine and especially her grandchildren. While serving his country, Robert met his bride, Mary Kathryn Jones Pauley, whom he married on May 3, 1953. Together, they raised their six children on Rt. 266, in Stockport. He was a mechanic at Central Ohio Coal Co and Shelly & Sands, retiring in 1994 from Central Ohio. He was a strong union man. After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, and going to Bluegrass festivals throughout the country. Robert enjoyed life and was looking forward to planting his garden that he was always so proud of. He loved to laugh, and enjoyed fishing, but, his greatest joy was getting all his family together for a barbeque. He is survived by, and will be sadly missed, by his wife, Kathy, of 55 years, and his children, Irene and her husband, Jim Davis, of Blue Rock, Jim and his wife, Debbie, of Duncan Falls, Larry and his wife, Carol, of Coolville, Debbie Lilly of League City, TX, Johnny of Lore City and Teresa and her husband, John Matheney of McConnelsville, 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 4 sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by two sisters, one of them was his twin; two brothers and a grandson, Jeremiah. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley& Peoples Funeral Home, with Pastor Chad McCune officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Anna Elizabeth Spindler, 89, of Marietta, died Wednesday morning, April 23, 2008, at Harmar Place. She was born June 17, 1918 in Washington County to Andrew and Louise Schilling Arnold. She was a graduate of Waterford High School. She had worked at Remington Rand until 1955, and had been a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. James Douglas “Jim” Radabaugh, 88, of Marietta, died Sunday afternoon, April 6, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born May 28, 1919 in Cincinnati to James L. and Ada Pence Radabaugh. He graduated from Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Ohio University. He had worked at, and retired from, Par Mar Oil. He had also owned and operated the New Mecca Café and the Rio Vista Supper Club and Motel. He was a Mason, member of the Marietta Elks, and past member of the Marietta Country Club. Jim enjoyed golf and most of all enjoyed his grandchildren, they always made him smile. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Wallace Radabaugh, whom he married on August 24, 1940; four children, James “Jay” Radabaugh (Kay) of Lebanon, Ohio, Linda Allen of College Station,Texas, Kathie Hollister (Bill) of Williamstown, WV and Nick Radabaugh (Genice) of Marietta; six grandchildren, Heather Skeith (Robert), Carmel Dellinger (Scott), Dawk Hollister (Kristy), Scott Hollister, Dacia Mantick (R.J.) and Connor Radabaugh; eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was born August 20, 1919 in Akron, Ohio, to Brooks B. and Laura Surface Norman. His home had been in Williamstown, since his family moved there in 1920. He was a Christian, by faith. Brice served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, also served in the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion, General George Post #159 in Williamstown and a lifetime member of the VFW in Parkersburg. He is survived by two sisters, Kate Duvall (James) of Boaz, WV and Willa Grace Norman of the family home in Williamstown; two nephews, Timothy L. Duvall (Sue) of Williamstown and Joseph Duvall of Boaz; two nieces, Rebecca Deem (Michael) of Ripley, WV and Judy Duncan (Gene) of Williamstown. He was well known for playing music in the area and enjoyed collecting antiques. He was born June 23, 1923 in Marietta to the late Albert and Hazel Curtis Burke. He was a 1942 graduate of Marietta High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II for three years, spending 16 months in India. He was employed at Elkem Metals and retired after 35 years of service. Bob attended the Whitman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a licensed umpire in baseball and had umpired at Marietta College and Marietta High School and was active in local sports programs. He was a member of the Masonic “Mellenik” Lodge #74, now located in Belpre and the VFW Post #5108 in Marietta. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vivian Beard Burke; three sons, Barry S., David R. and Mark A., all of Marietta; four grandchildren, Andrea Burke of Cincinnati, David J. Barbara Ann Richardson Brunton, 83, of Marietta died Sunday evening March 23, 2008 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born August 29, 1924 in Columbus, OH to Leonard Edward and Gladys Zollinger Richardson. She was raised in Glouster, OH while attending and later graduating from Columbus School for Girls in Columbus, OH, and Ward Belmont Academy in Nashville, TN. She also attended Marietta College, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. Barbara was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, The Betsey Mills Club and The Marietta Welfare League. For many years she was also involved in the Meals on Wheels program. Barbara was an avid golfer and long time member of Marietta Country Club.
Barbara was the beloved wife of Rankin G. Brunton, whom she married on June 22, 1945 in Natchitoches, LA. She was a loving mother of 6 children: Gregory (Brian Wolbaum) of Los Angeles, CA; Geoffrey, Christopher (Candy Davis) and Bruce (Nann) of Marietta; Ann Cohen (Jerry) of Hudson, OH; and Susan Reinmann (Jim) of Avon Lake, OH. She was an adored grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson: Todd, Andrea (mother of great-grandson, Aden Pearson), and Ashley Brunton; Ben and Aimee Brunton; Joanna, Jamie, Jerry and Julie Brunton; Stephanie and Allison Cohen; and Emily, Nicholas and Lara Reinmann. Barbara is also survived by her loving brother L.E. "Dick" Richardson, Jr. (Sharon) of Newark, OH and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her sister, Cynthia Wentis.

Robert Eugene Richardson, Sr., 92, of 906 Colegate Drive, Marietta, Ohio passed away at his home on March 18, 2008 after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Virginia Ewing Richardson; four children: June (Mike) Rough; Robert (Ida) Richardson, Jr., Ann (Dennis) Valentine, and David (Pamela) Richardson; 14 Grandchildren: Joy Goodman, Rebecca Davis, Randall Prentice, Julia Medlyn, Rachel O’Brien, and Paula Crawford; Lee, Aidan, and Zachary Richardson; Susannah Rhodes and Sarah Korodi; Seth, Benjamin, and Gregory Richardson and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Ralph R. Richardson, his mother Julia Russell Richardson, his first wife Evelyn Denny Richardson and his brother Russell. He was born March 30, 1915, in Athens’ County Ohio. Before graduating from high school, he took a job at the Athens’ Messenger to help his family meet expenses. He later graduated from New Paris High School, New Paris, Ohio. In 1944 he bought the Owens Print Shop in Marietta, Ohio and renamed it Richardson Printing Corporation. Shortly after moving to Marietta, his first wife passed away leaving him with two small children. On March 17, 1945, he married Virginia Ewing Richardson. He was President of Richardson Printing for sixty-three years and only stopped going to work a few weeks before his death. He was a member of and co-founder of the Chapel on The Hill. Mr. Richardson was very active in the Marietta community for a number of years including service to the following organizations: Marietta Kiwanis Club, Marietta Chamber of Commerce, Marietta YMCA, Marietta United Way, Marietta City Board of Education, Marietta Memorial Hospital, Washington Technical College, Washington County Vocational School, The Dime Savings Society and Commercial Bank and Trust of Parkersburg. Friends and neighbors may pay their respects at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Thursday, from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
