Obituary for Ruth Naomi Dake (Cogswell)

Ruth Naomi Dake (Cogswell)
Ruth Naomi Cogswell Dake, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Green Acres Assisted Living in Lowell, Michigan.

Ruth was born March 3, 1924 and raised in Marietta, Ohio on the Cogswell family dairy farm on Newport Pike. She graduated from Marietta High School and attended Marietta College in the fall of 1942. There she met Jack Dake who soon enlisted in the United States Army and they married in 1944 at Camp Polk, Louisiana. Ruth became a war bride while Jack served 15 months in Europe during World War II. Upon his return, they moved to Morgantown, West Virginia where Jack finished his degree at WVU.

Ruth devoted her life to her family and friends. She was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years. Ruth served her community on the women’s board of the Betsey Mills Club, the House Corporation for Chi Omega Sorority and was a member of the Marietta Welfare League. She also was a 4-H leader and served on the American Cancer Society Board. In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed reading, playing cards, cooking, crossword puzzles, bible study, all college sports, especially WVU football/basketball and spending time with her family. Her family and friends loved her quick wit and sense of humor.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John Landreth Dake (Jack); daughter, Dana Dake Armsey; son-in-law, Hobie Burgnon; parents, Benjamin and Linnie Cogswell; brother, Clifford Cogswell, and sister, Virginia Cogswell Boord.

Above all, Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her strong faith and trust in the Lord, as well as her compassion, generosity and kindness will be remembered by all those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by son, John Dake, daughters, Andrea Bronger and Beverly Burgnon; grandchildren, Jonathan Donaldson (Janie), Case Armsey (Amanda), Nicole Dake, Tyler Bronger (Leslie), Kyle Bronger, Beau Burgnon (Amanda), Alex Burgnon (Jennifer) and her loving great grandchildren, Grant, Evan, Hayes, Sebastion, Stasia, Ezrah, Lilly, Marley, Brynlee and Blake. Ruth is also survived by her brother, Harry Cogswell, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Her celebration of life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. Burial of her ashes will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Green Acres, Sentinel Pointe Retirement Home and many therapists, nurses and care givers who provided much support and comfort to Ruth and her family over the past five years.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Marietta, Ohio or Hospice of Michigan.
