Johnny received specialist degrees in reading instruction having attended Marietta College and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. During his professional career, he taught at three major universities: Lehigh University, Ohio University and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He also developed and delivered many workshops related to reading instruction to teachers and persons working with adults in community settings. Wherever he lived, he never gave up his love for the outdoors of canoeing, mountain climbing, long bow archery, bicycling, hiking and camping. Many times, you would see him paddling his canoe on the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers or cycling in and around Marietta. Johnny was also proud of the many rugby teams he played for. He always commented that he had played 23 seasons straight once.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Northrup and their two Standard Poodles; two children of a former marriage, Brett Ashley Bagshaw of Kensington, MD and Leigh Mallory Northrup of Concord, NC; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Christopher Deane Northrup of Vienna, WV and Michael Edgar Northrup of Baltimore, MD; and many nieces and nephews.
