Obituary

John Wilcox Spear, 90, of Marietta, Ohio died on Monday, September 30, 2019. He was born on January 29, 1929 in Loudonville, Ohio to Brinkerhoff and Leah Spear.

John was a 1947 graduate of Mansfield High School. He received his BS from Kent State University and his BS in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University in 1956. He was the first pharmacist at Marietta Memorial Hospital and began his 41-year career there in 1965. After he retired, he returned to work at the hospital part time and continued in that role until 2014.

He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a Korean War Veteran. He remained active in the American Legion Post 64 BTW. John was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Ohio. He also was active in many civic organizations including the Lion’s Club, the Elks Club, and the Board of Health. He was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen.

John met his future soul mate, Joan Senert Spear, when they were six years old. They married on September 3, 1950. She preceded him in death in 2006. John and Joan Spear are survived by three sons: John (Sue) of Darien, IL, Joel (Cathleen) of Chicago, IL, and Jeffrey of Marietta; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Audrey) of Petaluma, CA, Alexia (Lou) Perez of Bolingbrook, IL, Jonathan (Sarah) of Aurora, IL, Jeff of Chicago, IL, Ian of San Francisco, CA, and Jordan (Meredith) of Snead’s Ferry, NC; and five great grandchildren (Logan, Dylan, Brianna, Bryar, and Bralynn).

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Ohio on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM with Reverend David Smith officiating. Full military honors will be observed as well. Family will greet friends for one hour before the service and at a reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given in John’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or to the Memorial Health System Foundation.

John will be remembered for his generosity of spirit and his indomitable and positive attitude. His quick wit and ribald sayings will keep his spirit alive for all who knew and loved him.

I always enjoyed seeing John and enjoying drinks and dinner in his home with his son Jeff and the Alden’s. Lots of laughs, stories, and great memories. When I was renovating my home he would FaceTime me to catch up and I’d give him a virtual tour. Loved our chats and laughs. Until we meet again, my friend.

He was in fact a King, in most ways, and we're gonna cherish every single memory we got with that Man.
Its kind of a testament to the man himself that I dont have any pictures on my phone of me and him, being around him you were too busy cuttin it up about whatever it is was on each of your minds.
Hope he rests sound.
