Anita Smith

Anita Smith, 77, of Hewitt, Texas, passed away Saturday (Sept. 11, 2010) at her home. Anita was born July 18, 1933, in Scarboro, W. Va., to Reverend George E. and Madeline Flynn. Anita lived in many parts of West Virginia during her childhood as a result of her father's traveling ministry. She met the love of her life, Eugene Edward "Gene" Smith in Winifrede, W. Va. They were married on Oct. 29, 1949. They lived in Winifrede until 1963, New Jersey until 1970, Williamstown, W. Va., until 1975, Norton, Mass., until 1981, and Hewitt, Texas for the remainder of her life. Anita retired from Owens Illinois glass plant in 1994 after working there for 17 years. Anita's biggest joy was spending time with Gene, her children and grandchildren. Gene passed away on November 27, 2007.
Anita is survived by her adored children, her daughters Diana "Sue" Smith of Waco, Patricia A. Smith of Waco, Denita J. Johnstone of Slidell, La., and Darlena K. Smith of Hewitt, her son Samuel H. Smith and wife, Marcy, of Hewitt, and her daughter-in-law, Peggy A. Smith, of Williamstown, W.Va.; her treasured grandchildren, Autumn D. Highsmith and husband, Blake, of Forney, Texas, Jennifer M. Giffen and husband, Chad, of Belpre, Ohio, Chrystal D. Johnstone of Lacombe, La., Matthew E. Smith and wife, Amanda, of Frasers Bottom, W. Va., Heather M. Johnstone of Pearl River, La., Mikayla N. Allen of Hewitt, Abigail M. Smith of Hewitt, Lydia P. Smith of Hewitt and Khristian P. Allen of Hewitt; her beloved great-grandchildren, Colby C. Wilkinson of Pearl River, Logan K. Highsmith of Forney, Kaitlyn M. Grimes of Pearl River, Madeline M. Procell of Lacombe, Madison M. Smith of Frasers Bottom and Brianna N. Procell of Lacombe; her niece Norma J. Green of Whitesville, W. Va.; her aunts Ethel Westfall of Hinton, W. Va., Dorothy Dillman of Hinton, Elizabeth Neely of Clifton Forge, Va.; special friend Ernest Johnstone, and many loved cousins.
Anita is also survived by members of Gene's family that she considered her own: Gene's sisters, Doris A. Dunlap and husband, Major, of Charleston, W. Va., and Kay F. Skidmore of Virginia Beach, Va.; his brother Kenneth L. Smith and wife, Janet, of Ashford, W. Va.; his brother-in-law Charles McGraw of Charleston; and many loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Anita was preceded in death by Gene, her son James E. Smith, her parents, her sisters Juanita J. Green and Jenevia J. Flynn, her nephew James W. Green, her aunt Nellie Plumbley and Gene's sister Clara "Jewel" McGraw. Her funeral service will be held at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, 408 Front St., Marietta, Ohio on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Her family will greet friends on Saturday for one hour prior to her service. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Williamstown, WV.
