Betty Lee Bee Bookman, 89, of Williamstown, WV, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Harmar Place in Marietta, OH. A daughter of the late Bronny Bronson Bee and Eliza Ann Everline Bee, she was born on December 31, 1923 in Harrisonburg, VA. She attended elementary schools in Cumberland and Frostburg, MD and moved to Williamstown in 1937. She graduated from Williamstown High School in 1941, where she was valedictorian of her class. She attended Marietta College and then worked for the US Navy Department in Washington, DC during World War II. She worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Marietta until her marriage to Atlee Bookman in 1946. Betty was a member of the Junior Women's Club in Williamstown. She served as a Boy Scout den mother and as a Girl Scout leader. Betty was a member of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir, and served on the altar guild. She was an avid reader, amateur artist, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. A lover of nature and history, her hobbies included birdwatching, artifacting, boating and fishing. Betty is survived by her husband of 67 years, Atlee DeVol Bookman, sons, Craig Devol Bookman of Marietta, Scott Wilson (fianc Jeanette McKenna) Bookman of Williamstown, daughter, Leslie Ann (Doug) Male of New Albany, OH, grandchildren, Zoe Bookman of Mineral Wells, WV, Allyson Grove of Black Mountain, NC, Zachary Male of New Albany, OH and Matthew Male of Columbus, OH, and two great grandsons, Volun and Ethan Grove of Black Mountain, NC. Betty is also survived by a sister, Mary Lou Rush of Virginia Beach, VA, niece, Barbara (Dale) Bowen and nephews, Michael (Patti), Robert (Lee Ann), and David (Shari) Bookman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother in law, Bob Bookman and sister in law, Marye Nell Bookman. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Heller officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown. Donations may be made to Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, 409 Columbia Ave., Williamstown, WV 26187
