Betty L. Smith, 91, of Vincent, Ohio, died Friday, January 24, 2020 after a courageous, long battle with Alzheimer's. Betty was able to live in the home she loved, with the help of her daughter, for 10 ½ years.
Betty was born on September 13, 1928 to Leland "Sparky" Hawkins and Sunshine Flowers. At the age of seven, she became the step daughter to Rodney Brackenridge, and throughout her life, both fathers were in her life and heart equally. Later in life, she lived in a home built on the Brackenridge farm.
She attended Marietta City Schools and Baltimore, MD schools, and at 15, her and a friend won a singing competition for a celebrity radio show. Betty worked for Stifflers Dress Shop and J.C. Penney, this developed her passion for fashion.
She met and married Fred G. Warren while attending Marietta College. Betty worked for Big Bear, Remington Rand and then Kardex, where she retired at 29 years in 1991. This is where she met her second husband, Norman W. "Smitty" Smith, married in 1984. The two enjoyed fishing, and won several tournaments.
She is survived by her two children, Mary Margaret Warren, of Vincent and Michael Shawn Warren of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with visitation before the services from 11 to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
