Catherine Jennings Bain

April 21, 1926 — February 27, 2010

Catherine Jennings Hudock Bain, of Marietta, Ohio, died Saturday (Feb. 27, 2010) after an eight-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Mrs. Bain was well-known as the "wine lady" of Front Street, and had owned The Wine Shop from 1976 until 2004. She originally lived on Cisler Drive, until she moved in with her daughter and family at 103 Wildwood Drive. Born in Monongahela, Pa., the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Hudock, Mrs. Bain was beloved by all with whom she met.

Catherine graduated from Monongahela High School in 1943, and went to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Over the years, she worked at Mine Safety Appliances Company, the Lerner Corporation, and after moving to Marietta, worked for the Ohio Valley Cable Company until she purchased her own wine shop at 162 Front St. in Marietta.

A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marietta, and belonged to many organizations over the years, including the Eagles, Moose, and Elks clubs. She also loved to go out to dine with her dear friend, Robert Bartlett.

Catherine is survived by two children, Babette (H. Bradley) Bole of Marietta, and Benjamin F. (Clare) Bain III of Indianapolis, Ind. A brother survives, Gabriel Hudock and his wife, Monica, of Eighty-Four, Pa. There are five grandchildren of whom she was incredibly proud, H. Alexander Bole of Holland, Ohio, Christopher G. Bole of Marietta, and Benjamin F., David and Elizabeth Bain, all of Indianapolis.

Numerous nieces and nephews survive, Dr. Sharon Hirsh of Gulch Mills, Pa., Brian Hudock of Dublin, Ohio, Regis Hudock of Columbus, Ohio, Gabriel Hudock of Peters, Pa., and Joseph Hudock of Indianapolis.

Also surviving are nieces, Carolyn Eitel of San Raphael, Calif., Ann Holloway of Sydney, Australia, Wendy DiRuscio of Rome, Italy, and Laurie Brewer of Elkridge, Md.

Mrs. Bain was preceded in death by her parents and most of her siblings, Marcella, Joseph and Father Regis Hudock, and her oldest sister and dearest "friend," Mary Casselle Latchaw. Also preceding her were a niece, Maureen Hudock and a nephew, Paul Latchaw.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice or the Strecker Cancer Center in Catherine's name.

The family also encourages all women to have annual check-ups that could make a difference in their lives.

Because of Catherine's longevity with this disease, she has donated her body to The Ohio State University. More information on a memorial Mass will be forthcoming.
