Charlie Meredith Ballard

Charlie Meredith Ballard, 85, of Marietta died Wednesday, 31 October 2012 at his residence. He was born 20 August 1927 in Austin, Texas to Darrell and Vivian Ballard.
Mr. Ballard graduated from high school in Oak Ridge, Tenn. in 1945. Mr. Ballard served in the United States Navy from 1945 - 46 as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class, with an Honorable Discharge. Following his Navy service, he attended Marietta College and graduated in 1951 with a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry.
Mr. Ballard began his lifelong employment with American Cyanamid (now CyTech) soon after his graduation, retiring in 1989 as Safety Manager. During his retirement years, Mr. Ballard served on the Marietta City School District Board of Education from 1991-99. Mr. Ballard was an active member of the Christ United Methodist Church.
Charlie Ballard developed a wide range of interests and talents, including acting in the Mid-Ohio Players Group, rowing on the Muskingum River with friends, restoring antique furniture, and practicing golf with his buddies. He loved opera and was an avid reader with a wide range of literary interests. He was also a co-facilitator of the Annual Randolf Scott Commemoration Dinner.
Mr. Ballard was a wonderful father and devoted husband. He actively supported his children's aspirations in athletics, education, and professional careers. He and his wife took great delight in their roles as grandparents and great grandparents. His children recall with appreciation and respect his devotion to their mother, that included never leaving her side during her battles with cancer.
Mr. Ballard is preceded in death by his brothers Norman and Rayburn Ballard and sister Gloria Smitley, and his loving wife, Anita, whom he married on 7 September 1947. He is survived by his three children, Brett Marcus Ballard (Boua Chanthou) of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Barth Cornell Ballard (Debbie) of San Diego, Calif., and Jeanette Fay Jones (Don) of Henderson, Nev., six grandchildren, Maya and Shanti Ballard-Downs, Emma and Sarah Ballard, Patrick Kuryla and Ben Jones; and two great grandchildren, Kai Ruby and Thida Angel Heng.
Mr. Ballard's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the following for their support and caring assistance provided during his final months: the management and staff of Glenwood Retirement Community, the nursing staff of The Pines, the hospice services provided by Marietta Memorial hospital and each member of the home personal care providers.
Visitation will be on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley and Peoples Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 6 November with the Rev. Don Archer officiating. His burial will be in Mound Cemetery.
