Clarence Dana Boord

Clarence Dana Boord, 91, of Barlow died Sunday afternoon, July 7, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital in Zanesville.
Dana, as he was usually called, was born June 13, 1922 near Layman, Washington County, the son of Alonzo and Anna (Plummer) Boord. He was a 1941 graduate of Vincent High School.

Often called the "Mayor of Barlow", Boord spent much of his life in service to the village. He was a founding member of the Barlow Volunteer Fire Department, served 12 years as a Barlow Township Trustee, and sat for many years on the board of the Barlow Fairgrounds.

Boord also spearheaded a drive to construct a community walking track which today bears his name as the "Barlow Boordwalk". Throughout his life, he could often be found lending a helping hand for family and friends.

He was a longtime member of Decatur Chapel Church in Decaturville, where he worshipped regularly until his illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth (Thornberry), his brothers Delbert, Bill and Joe, and his sisters Sylvia and Dolores.

He is survived by his two daughters, Sandy Ellinger (Tom) of Richmond, Ind. and Sally Stutzman (Dave) of Barlow. Also surviving are his three grandchildren -- Dana Hall of Denver, Colo., Shawn Spence of Minneapolis, Minn. and Erica Spence of Layman -- and his five great-granddaughters; Jaden, Grace, Julia, Harper, and Estella.

Also surviving is his close friend Jean Miskimins, and her children Lisa, Larry and Sharon (Newlen), and grandchildren Emily, Corey, Sarah and Katie. Preceding Dana in passing was Jean's first grandson Nicholas.

Boord retired from Union Carbide in 1981, where he helped found the Riverview Credit Union.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tim Lindsey, Decatur Chapel Pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley &Peoples Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations for the upkeep of the Barlow Boordwalk may be directed to Scenic Hills Lions Club through the Bartlett Farmers Bank. Burial will be in Barlow Central Cemetery.
