Dayton Eugene Karcher

April 4, 1933 — June 13, 2017

Dayton E. Karcher, 84, of Marietta, Ohio, passed away at his home, with his loving family by his side, on June 13, 2017. Dayton was born on April 4, 1933 in Marietta, Ohio to the late Merle Lee Karcher and Thelma (Berga) Karcher.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy, during the Korean Conflict, as a Third Class Sonarman. He then married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Middleswart on June 21, 1955 and they were married for 50 years upon her passing. Dayton served on the Marietta Police Dept., Washington Co. Sheriff's Dept. and Western Southern Life Insurance Co. until he retired. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, DAV, NRA and served as President of the Washington Co. Apiaries Association for many years. His hobbies included beekeeping, fishing, target practice and working on lawn mowers. He enjoyed visits from his neighbors and loved visiting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dayton is survived by three children, Malorie Hill (David) of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Karcher (Sherry) of Lowell, NC and Brenda Buzzard (David) of Marietta, OH. He is also survived by five granddaughters, Shannon Lerch (Kurt), Lauren Karcher, Leigh Ann Eichinger (Justin), Julia Karcher and Victoria Buzzard and great grandchildren Austin, Jordan, Reece, Brayden, Ryan, Brooklynn, and Kolton, and a very special friend, Juanita Hinkle.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley, his parents, his brothers, Galen Karcher, Harry Karcher and Merle Karcher, his sisters, Marguerite Harris and Jeanette Borman.
The family wishes to send special thanks to his caregiver, Susie Leister and to Dr. Kelli Cawley and his hospice nurses. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Marietta Hospice, 450 Pike St., Ste. I1, Marietta, OH 45750.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017 at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Patricia L. Peoples officiating. Entombment will follow in the chapel at East Lawn Mausoleum, with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at the funeral home.
