Dr. William C. Rankin, Jr.

Dr. William C. Rankin, Jr., 83, of Marietta, died Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born April 28, 1929 in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania to Dr. William C. Rankin, Sr. and Mary Irwin Rankin. He received his BA in Education from Marietta College and graduated from the Des Moines, Iowa School of Osteopathy. He served his residency at Selby Hospital and was former Chief of Staff there. His specialty was cranial work. Doc took great pride in his medical career and practiced for 52 years at his office in Devola, practicing with his father until the late 1960s. He was very dedicated to his patients, and to the community, having served as team physician for the Marietta High School basketball and football teams for many years, as well as being a MHS booster. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, having served as Elder there for many years. He had been involved in Boy Scouting, was a Mason, a Jester and member of the Shrine. Doc enjoyed boating and was a member of the Marietta Boat Club. He was a founding member of the East Muskingum Civic Association, Marietta Country Club and the NRA. He enjoyed working on his antique trucks, golfing, camping, hunting, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a Civil War enthusiast and a Buckeye fan. Doc was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Householder Rankin, son, William C. Rankin, III (Barbara) of Marietta, daughter, Kimberly Anne Reinhold (James) of Cincinnati, three grandchildren, Matthew and Ellen Reinhold and Carly Rankin, brother, Robert Rankin (Judy) of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, sister Rachel Plymale (Charles) of Whitehouse, several in laws, nieces and nephews and his beloved companion, Fritzi. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. George Spransy officiating. Friends may call on Friday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where there will be Masonic services held at 7:30 p.m. He will be entombed in East Lawn Mausoleum. Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 501 Fourth St., or to the Marietta Community Foundation, P.O. Box 77, Marietta, OH 45750, earmarked for the East Muskingum Civic Association.
