Eileen Rebecca Hayes

January 22, 1923 — October 12, 2014

Eileen Rebecca Hayes, age 91, died peacefully at Harmar Place on October 12, 2014. Born on January 22, 1923, to John Wesley Anders and Edith Anna Anders, she attended Marietta schools. On November 8, 1945 she married John Thomas Hayes. After her husband's death, she ran his office supply business, Central Office Supply. She lived in Marietta, Ohio for most of her life and was a true friend to the city of Marietta and the state of Ohio. She worked for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union and was City Clerk of Marietta for Mayor John Burnworth. She was an Administrative Secretary for the Ohio Department of Transportation for many years until she retired at age 73.

Eileen dedicated much of her life in service of others in Marietta, whether it was as a top fundraiser for UnitedWay or participating in reading programs with local schoolchildren. She helped charter the Marietta Chapter of Zonta, a global organization of executives and professional women working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. She enjoyed attending two Zonta international conventions (Australia and France) as a delegate and many conventions and workshops in the US and Canada. She also served as President of the Marietta Chapter and in 2009, she was honored by Zonta for 50 years of service.

Eileen will be especially remembered for her countless volunteer and organization roles, with the Business Professional Women's Club, as a Gray Lady at Selby Hospital, the Women's Bicentennial Ball Committee, Marietta Chapter 59 of Eastern Star, the Women's Home, the Sternwheel Association, Beta Sigma Phi, Fearing House, the National Secretaries Association, the American Red Cross, the Democratic Women's Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 64, the Washington County Historical Society, the Toy and Doll Museum, the O'Neill Center, the Ohio Visitor's Center, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Washington County (Presidential Service Award for Hours Volunteered). When she wasn't volunteering, Eileen loved playing bridge and Bingo, water color painting, dancing, collecting music boxes and traveling to visit and with her family.
Eileen was the proud mother of Sandra Hayes Plochman and loving grandmother of Heather Nicole Plochman (Mark Sarne). She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Hayes and her brothers Paul Anders and Dale Anders.
A special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at The Pines and Harmar Place, who made Eileen feel at home at the end of her life.
A celebration of Eileen's life will be held at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on April 1, 2015, with a reception to follow at the funeral home.
