Elizabeth Bell Hamilton

Elizabeth graduated from Jasper High School. She transferred from Centenary to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville when her father died in 1950, and earned her B.S. in Journalism. She moved to Washington, DC, in 1957 and worked freelance for the Freer Gallery of Art, the National Radio Institute, and the American Society for Public Administration. Later, she became an editor and librarian for the Daughters of the American Revolution Library from which she retired in 1998. She was also a partner in the family East Texas land and timber business with her brother, Edward A. Hamilton. She was a long time member of the Texas Forestry Association.
Elizabeth was a lover of the arts and a quiet adventurer. She was known for her dry wit, one-liners and her undying friendship and compassion. One of her favorite pastimes was to jet off to New York with her college friend, Judy, to see one of her favorite actors Marian Seldes perform on Broadway. She was a Circle member of the National Gallery of Art, and became an avid art collector. She loved jazz, ballet, politics and exciting conversation. She was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her loving and dedicated caregiver, Kady Kone of Silver Spring, Md., and her nieces and nephews, Susan Hamilton Burleigh (Rick) of Seattle, WA; Ann Hamilton (Jan and Jenna Palmer and Whitney Schelat) Athens, Ohio; and Tom Hamilton (Carin and Andrew Dugowson) of Mercer Island, WA. Her brother Edward A. Hamilton of Marietta, Ohio preceded her in death.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 May 5, 2012, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Marietta, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic of Metropolitan Washington, 5225 Wisconsin Ave, N.W., Washington, DC 20015, a non profit organization that records and distributes audio books to people who have visual, physical, or perceptual disabilities, www.learningally.org; the J.R. Huffman Public Library, 375 Sabine Street, Hemphill, TX 75948; or the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC 20565.
