Elizabeth "Betty" Louise Schoeppner, a beloved resident of Marietta, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the age of 97. She was born on September 30, 1927, in Lower Salem, Ohio, to Nicholas and Tessie Leora Fulton. Betty lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to her family and community.
Betty was the cherished wife of the late Edward "Jake" Thomas Schoeppner, whom she married on September 3, 1949.
A graduate of Salem-Liberty High School, Betty worked as a secretary at Kardex and served as the secretary for Salem-Liberty Elementary School for 15 years. Her dedication extended beyond her professional life into her community involvement with the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, the St. Henry's Catholic Women's Club, and the Marietta Senior Club. She had a passion for gardening, watching sports, especially the Cincinnati Reds, bowling, and playing cards. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Betty's warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love and devotion to her family and community will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
Betty is survived by her loving children: Teresa (Steve) Porter, Martha (Mike) Tanner, Thomas (Candis/C'Ann) Schoeppner, David (Maria) Schoeppner, and Debra (Jim) Houser. She was a proud grandmother to Chris (Darcie) Porter, M. Todd (Sara) Porter, Kelly (Chad) Birkas, Jill (Bear) Grass, Elizabeth (Plamen Kirov) Schoeppner, Daniel Schoeppner, Nicholas (Jenny) Schoeppner, William Houser, Jacob (Caroline) Houser, Sarah Schoeppner, Stephanie Houser, Patrick Schoeppner, and Cathryn Schoeppner. Betty also leaves behind her step-grandson, Chad (Leslie) Tanner, and great-grandchildren Henry and Audrey Porter, Eva and Sarina Porter, Reagan and Quinn Birkas, Violet Grass, and Riley Schoeppner, as well as step-great-grandchildren Sydney and Dylan Tanner. She is also survived by her sister, Bonnie Boley, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Helen Eileen Schoeppner, her step-grandson, Brandon Tanner, her brothers, Leonard, Herbert, Homer, Leroy, Ernest, and Edgar David Fulton, and sisters Ethel Wasson, Violet Biehl, Gertrude Lauer, and Virginia Fulton.
A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. with The Rev. Edward Maxfield Jr. officiating. A graveside service will follow at Lower Salem Cemetery in Lower Salem, Ohio. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Betty's life at a visitation on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the MARIETTA CHAPEL OF CAWLEY & PEOPLES FUNERAL HOMES, where a Vigil Service will also be held at 5:00 p.m.
