Ella Mae Young
December 10, 2024 Ella Mae Young, 94 left this world to join her family and friends in heaven. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Dick F. Young and her parents Raymond and Blanch Lang Tornes, siblings Jean Weinheimer (Lawrence), Harold Tornes, Tony Tornes (survived by his wife Donna). She is survived by her daughter Dr. Betty Young of Nelsonville, granddaughter Shoshanna Brooker (Jeff), great granddaughter Lakyn Brooker, her sister Ruth Morgan (Leroy) of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ella Mae grew up on the Tornes family farm in Churchtown. Although her memory faded, those beautiful childhood memories stayed with her to the end. She was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
After losing her husband she enjoyed the companionship of Dewey Schau. They enjoyed an active life together, often spending time dancing until they could dance no more.
Ella Mae was known for being headstrong and having an unwavering work ethic. She spent her life farming with her husband raising sheep and cattle at their Turkeyhen farm. Many young men worked for her on the farm over the years including but not limited to the Pottmeyers, Arnolds, Langs, Hucks, Kerns, and Brookers. All appreciated coming from the field to be served a home cooked meal with ingredients from her garden and “yummy cake” that she made for them while working right along side them in the field all day. This was her superpower.
When her daughter Betty started kindergarten, Ella Mae went to beauty school. Ella Mae worked as a hairdresser for 40 years at shops in Lowell and Marietta. She also worked in several nursing homes as the resident hairstylist and considered it her mission work.
Ella Mae lived with her daughter in her final years, honoring a promise made by Betty many years before. Ella Mae was proud of the accomplishments of her girls, Betty, Shoshanna, and Lakyn and had a special place in her heart for Jeff who she viewed as a wonderful addition to her small family.
The family wishes to thank Shriver’s Hospice and their nurses, aids and volunteers and a family friend, Barbara Drake, who helped with her care.
