Elsie B. Garretson

Elsie B. Garretson, 98, died Saturday, February 27, 2010 in Marietta. She was born December 31, 1911 in Sunflower County, Mississippi to the late William Estes and Dorinda "Dolly" O'Bryant Buckley. She graduated in 1929 from Cleveland, MS High School as the class salutatorian. Elsie became a registered nurse, graduating from Kings Daughters Hospital in Greenville, MS and furthered her education at the University of Tennessee. Subsequently, much of her nursing career was spent at Le Bonheur Hospital with iron lung patients. She was active in the Tennessee State Nurses Association, the American Red Cross, Baptist orphanages, Memphis Arts Council and Washington County Women's Republican Club. Elsie was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Diane (Jim) Schweikert, of Marietta, granddaughter, Jana (Bradly) Winkhart, of North Canton, grandson, James (Staci) Schweikert, of Green, Ohio, and great grandchildren, Seth and Loren Winkhart, and Thomas and Andrew Schweikert. She was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Garretson, they had been married on October 7, 1933. Also preceded by a daughter, Patricia, a great granddaughter, Elena Winkhart, three brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with the Rev. David Bilyeu officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 301 Fourth St., Marietta, OH 45750, or to a library of the donor's choice.
