Franklin McDowell Riley
Franklin McDowell Riley, 85, of Marietta and formerly of Hubbard, Ohio, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Marietta. He was born on October 10, 1923 in Henry, Illinois to Joseph and Gertrude McDowell Riley. He was a graduate of Augusta High School, Columbiana County, Ohio. Frank was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during World War II in the South Pacific with the First Armored Amphibian Battalion. He spent most of his adult life in the trucking business, working for many different trucking companies. He worked his way from local driver to management and co-ownership. He was a member of the American Legion Post #64, was a past Rotarian, and enjoyed antique cars and crossword puzzles. Frank is survived by his wife, Betty A. Zgurich, they were married on January 10, 1953; four sons, Raymond of Vienna, Ohio, Patrick (Carol) of Southington, Ohio, Michael (Laurie) of Anadarko, Oklahoma and Dennis (Jeanne) of Marietta; two daughters, Elaine Riley of Hubbard and Eileen Riley of Fairport Harbor, Ohio; eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Michael Joseph Riley II, a brother, Charles L. Riley and a sister, M. Elaine Riley Zuzan. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. There will be a reception at the funeral home immediately following his service. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
