Friedel Laura Barrett

Friedel Laura Barrett (nee Reintjens) died on February 27, 2014, at The Arbors at Delaware in Delaware, Ohio. Born November 3, 1936, in Hassum, Germany, she was preceded in death by her parents, Matthias and Engelina (van de Loo) Reintjens, her husband, David, her infant brother, Peter, brother, Wilhelm Reintjens, and her American host family parents, Marion and Ruth (Cackler) Schilliger.
Friedel is survived by her three sons, one daughter, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They include: David and Terri Barrett, Jr. of Columbus, and their children, Sergey, Katerina, Daria and Creighton Barrett; Patrick and Eryn Barrett of Vincent, and their sons, Ryan and Joseph (Shelley) Barrett; Engelina "Susie" and Dan Bline of Mechanicsburg and their children, Ann Marie (Joel) Box, Greg (Katie), Mark and Mary Bline; Brian and Janice Barrett of Evansville, Indiana, and their children, Jacob and Julia Barrett; along with great grandsons, Michael and Taylor Barrett; and her American host family sister Eileen (Art) Smallsreed of Newton Falls, Ohio. Also surviving are her siblings in Germany: Heinrich "Heinz" Reintjens, Elisabeth Peters, Maria Jansen, Johann (Katie) Reintjens, and nieces and nephews.
Friedel came to the United States in the summer of 1953 as an exchange student with the Grange International Exchange program. She completed her senior year at Elm Valley High School in Ashley, Ohio, and was married to David Carroll Barrett on July 29, 1954, in St. Mary Catholic Church in Delaware, Ohio.
In addition to being a devoted wife and homemaker, Friedel was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Parish for more than 50 years. Over the years, she had been active in the Catholic Women's Club, the CCL, PTA, Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, and a Red Cross Volunteer. She also gave many presentations on the customs and traditions of her native Germany to school and community groups.
A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 5080 School House Road, Little Hocking, Ohio, with The Rev. David Huffman celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery at Little Hocking. Friends may call at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, 11 White Oak Woods Drive, Barlow, Ohio, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, with a Rosary Service held at the funeral home at 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
