George Derrick Sauer

George D. Sauer of 200 Timberline Drive, Marietta, Ohio, passed away Friday, July 10, 2009, at his home at The Pines at Glenwood.
George Derrick Sauer was born August 27, 1914, in Marietta, Ohio, to Dr. W.W. Sauer and Adah Upham Sauer. He graduated from Marietta High School, received a B.A. in Business from Miami University, Ohio, and was a graduate of Ohio Northern University College of Law. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Phi Delta Phi Law Fraternity. He was awarded an honorary Juris Doctorate degree from Ohio Northern University College of Law.
Mr. Sauer served as a counter-intelligence agent in the U.S. Army during World War II and received an honorable discharge with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a member of the National Counter Intelligence Corps Association.
He began his law practice in Columbus, Ohio, then returned to Marietta to set up his private practice in 1949. He continued practicing law, specializing in oil and gas and corporate law for the next 40 years. He was on the Board of Directors for the Airolite Corporation, Forma Scientific, and Marietta Industrial Enterprises. He served as General Counsel for The River Gas Company and Forma Scientific.
In 1942 he married Elizabeth Runyan of Ada, Ohio. She preceded him in death in 1979. Surviving are two children and their families, Jeffrey Thomas Sauer and his wife, Brenda, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, and Sarah Ann Eells and her husband, Jon, of Marietta, Ohio. There are four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; Jeffrey Sauer, II, of Melbourne, Florida, Stephanie Sauer Woods, her husband, Jason and daughter, Amelia, of Orlando, Florida, Thomas Eells of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Caroline Eells Waller, her husband, Bryan, and son, Joseph, of Marietta, Ohio. One son, Douglas Runyan Sauer, preceded him in death in 1959. In 1981, he married Charlotte Elliott of Marietta, Ohio, who survives along with numerous step-children, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. David Sauer, and Attorney Denslow Sauer. His sister, Katherine Sauer Heine of Worthington, Ohio, survives along with numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
Mr. Sauer was involved in many civic organizations during his lifetime. He was a Paul Harris Fellowship Rotarian, former Chairman of the March of Dimes, former Trustee of the Presbyterian Church, former Trustee of the Salvation Army, former Trustee of the Y.M.C.A., former Chairman of the Washington County War Bond Campaign, and a 32nd Degree Mason. In addition, he was a member of several Masonic organizations ?" including American Union #1, Scottish Rite, and the Shriners Aladdin Temple. He was also a member of the Royal Order of Jesters and was awarded a Serpico Lifetime Membership. He was a lifetime member of the Mayflower Society, the American Legion, and the Marietta Gun Club.
Mr. Sauer was a Certified Tree Farmer and helped plant over 91,000 pine seedlings in Washington County during his lifetime.
He was one of the original members and the tenor singer in the Chord-Woulds, a barbershop quartet that performed at various events in the area and at the Lafayette Hotel.
Mr. Sauer enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. He caught record fish in both Canada and Mexico in his lifetime. His favorite saying was, "God does not deduct from man's allotted time those hours spent in fishing."
There will be a private service for family members only. The family requests no flowers. Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
