George Michael Stokes, 84, of Marietta, Ohio, died Saturday, April 1, 2017 at his home. He was born on October 5, 1932 in Pittsburgh, PA, to Elizabeth Josephine Timpson and John Thomas Stokes. George graduated from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and received his B.A.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a customer service representative for Elkem Metals, retiring in 1991 after 31 years with the company. George was a member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, where he participated in parish council and was an usher for many years. He was also a member of St. Vincent de Paul and past member of the Knights of Columbus in Marietta. He is survived by his wife, (Eleanor) Brenda O'Shea Stokes, whom he married on April 30, 1955; six children, Ray Stokes (Anne Marie) of Scotland, Bob Stokes (Cindy) of Lexington, KY, Cathy Pullen (friend, Ken) of Charlotte, NC, Miriam Moore (Randy) of Charlotte, Mike Stokes (Friend, Jonna) of Marietta, and Sharon Huff (Brad) of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Colkilt and Dolores Stokes, both of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Stokes; four brothers and two sisters. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with The Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell celebrating. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with a Vigil Service being held at 3:00 p.m. Burial of his ashes will take place at a later time at New St. Mary's Cemetery.
