Harold Theodore "Hud" Lang, 94, of Churchtown, Ohio, died Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Harmar Place in Marietta, Ohio. He was born on August 24, 1923, in Watertown Township, to Joseph Edward and Mary Evelyn Arnold Lang. He married Rosemary Martha Leonhart on April 27, 1949.
He retired from Elkem Metals after 32 years as a machinist. Upon retirement, he delivered flowers for Dudley's Florist the next 16 years. Hud served in World War II as Communications Chief for the 157th Field Artillery, Battery B, in the 44th Infantry Division. His service in combat began in Northern France, extended across Germany, and ended in Austria.
Hud had a true passion for gardening and was an avid Euchre player. His guiding philosophy was faith, family and community. He was an active member of numerous community service organizations including: St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Parish Council, Holy Name Society and Cemetery Association; Knights of Columbus, Grand Knight, 4th Degree K of C, Bishop Hartley Assembly, District Commander, Program Chair of the Southern Diocesan Ohio State Council; Churchtown Senior Citizens; Warren Water Association; Washington County Rural Electric Cooperative; Washington County Democratic Party; 4-H advisor; Watertown Volunteer Fire Department; Loyal Order of the Moose; FO of Eagles; Washington County Farm Bureau; Sheriff's Department Accountability Committee; Beekeeper's Association; Career Center Advisory Committee; life member of the Lowell American Legion Post and the VFW.
He is survived by his six children, Mike Lang (Karen), Becky Wilson, Pat Lang (Sandy), Rhonda Knoch (Brian), Bobbi Brooks and Rita Frum (Matt); sister in law, Deborah Misel (Rob); 12 grandchildren, Michele Ruelas, Brian Lang, Amber Wilson, Alex Wilson, Corrie Philipp, Matthew Lang, Greggory Lang, Lana Lange, Danielle Hatfield, Kasey Brooks, Tyler Brooks and Spencer Frum; 20 great grandchildren; five siblings, Delbert Lang (Norma), Robert Lang (Edna), Evelyn Neill, Jack Lang (Janet) and Shirley Oliver (Bob); sisters in law, Alice, Martha and Shirley Lang; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife on November 13, 1996; parents; son at birth, Rodney; granddaughter, Leslie Andrew; son in law, Kenn Brooks; seven brothers, James, Walter, Vincent, Joseph Jr., Bernard, Glenn and Gerald; and two sisters, Alice Schilling and Grace Strahler.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Churchtown, with The Rev. Timothy Davison celebrating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with a Vigil service conducted at 3 p.m.
