Harry Lee Fleming

November 5, 1948 — April 2, 2018

Harry Lee Fleming, 69, of Marietta passed away Monday, April 2, 2018. He was born November 5, 1948,
in Fairmont, WV, to the late Dr. Donald and Dorothy Schwertfeger Fleming.
Harry earned his bachelors in political science at The Ohio State University, and his masters and
doctorate from Ohio University. Harry started his career as a fourth grade teacher at Harmar
Elementary School and worked summers as a union carpenter. He also taught classes at Marietta
College. Harry served as principal at North Hills, Putnam and Washington Elementary Schools. He later
became Director of Education for Marietta City Schools, Superintendent of Belpre City Schools and
retired as Superintendent of Marietta City Schools in 2016.
Harry served as president of the Marietta Teachers Association. He was a member and past president of
the Marietta Rotary Club, served on the board of the Women's Home and recently on the Broughton
Foundation. He also served on the Eve Board of Directors. Harry enjoyed playing golf and was a member
of the Marietta Country Club. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He also enjoyed music,
playing guitar and piano.
Harry is survived by his wife, Leslie Joseph Fleming, a daughter Megan Marie Fleming of Washington
D.C., one sister Linda Jane Fleming (Tom Reebel), one brother John Allen Fleming all of Marietta and
several nieces and nephews.
Harry is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Carson Fleming.
Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 6, 2018 at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples
Funeral Home with The Rev. Linda Steelman officiating. Burial will be in Tunnel Cemetery. The family
will greet friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the
Scholarship Fund c/o Rotary Club of Marietta, P. O. Box 1138, Marietta, Ohio 45750.
