Helen Eileen Evans

April 26, 1917 — August 2, 2009

Helen Stacy Evans, 92, born Helen Eileen Stacy, of Lowell, passed away at The Ohio State University Medical Center just before midnight on August 2, 2009. She was born at Rainbow in Muskingum Township on April 26, 1917, the daughter of Arthur Regnier and Eva Christina Vaughn Stacy. After her father's untimely death in 1919, her family moved to Lowell. She attended elementary school through the eighth grade in Lowell. After her family moved to Athens, she attended Athens High School and graduated with the class of 1934. She immediately enrolled in Ohio University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1938.
On July 1, 1938, she married Marine Lt. Richard A. Evans at Greenup, Kentucky. She then moved with him to Quantico, Virginia. After her husband was sent aboard the USS Louisville in 1940 (he did not return to the United States until 1946), she and her mother moved back to their home in Lowell. During the Second World War she taught grades 5-8 at the Putnam School in what is now Devola. At war's end she taught several different subjects in the Lowell High School. After Richard resigned his officer's commission in the US Marines, she moved with her husband and mother to the landmark farm along State Route 60 which remained her home until her death. In 1947 Richard and Helen had one child, Stacy Allen Evans, who survives.
Subsequently, in the early 1950's Helen developed and ran a private kindergarten for several years, first at the old Putnam School building and then at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Carl Broughton. She retired from teaching to care for her mother. During this time she taught an adult Sunday School Class at Lowell Christian Church. Helen very much enjoyed farming along with her family, especially raising prize tomatoes along with strawberries ?" all in addition to a large vegetable garden. Helen served 8 years as the clerk of Muskingum Township, working closely with the township trustees.
After Richard retired from teaching at Marietta College, Helen cared for him at home for several years before his death in 1999. She continued to live at the family farm after he died. She attended Christ United Methodist Church in Marietta for approximately 45 years where she was a member of United Methodist Women and an active member of several circles. She was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers and the Washington County Republican Women's Club. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Ohio Association of Township Trustees and Clerks, and the American Association of University Women. In the latter organization she enjoyed being part of the Christmas Tour of Homes. She was an active participant in both the Stacy and Fleming family reunions.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and two brothers, Vaughn Elliott Stacy and Arthur Robert Stacy and their wives, and one nephew, James V. Stacy. She is survived by her son Stacy and his wife Cheryl, and their children Richard, Robert, William, and Mary and their families. She is also survived by the children of her brothers, one nephew, Dennis Stacy, and two nieces, Anne Forsht and Sharon Tworoger. There are other nieces and nephews as well through her husband's family. She is also survived by her husband's sister, Madge McQuain.
Visitation with Helen's family will take place on Wednesday, August 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. At the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, 408 Front Street, Marietta. Funeral services will occur on Thursday, August 6, at 1:30 p.m. At Christ United Methodist Church in Marietta, with the Rev. Don Archer officiating. Burial will be in the Rainbow Cemetery near her actual birthplace.
The family wishes to thank the clergy and staff of Christ United Methodist Church for their care and support, the Comfort Keepers organization (especially Carol Schramm), the doctors and nurses of Marietta Memorial Hospital and of the SICU in Doan Hall of University Hospital in Columbus, and family and friends who were very kind to and supportive of her.
