Another World War II veteran has died...Herman Francis Offenberger, 84, of Marietta, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born April 24, 1927 in Lowell to Leo and Helena Yost Offenberger. Herman served in the U.S. Army and had retired from Elkem Metals, following 34 years of employment. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and had been active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #64, VFW Post #5108, the DAV, and had been a volunteer for Franciscan Meals. He enjoyed golfing, camping, bowling and euchre. Herman is survived by his wife, Mary Bauerbach Offenberger, who he married on October 5, 1949, six sons, Kenneth L. (Bonnie) of Marietta, Larry P. (friend, Tammy Nichols) of Vincent, H. Thomas (Anita) of Marietta, Randy M. (Cheri) of Flower Mound, TX, Jerry A. (Joyce) and Scott M. (Lora) all of Marietta, a daughter, Judy Schneider (Bill) of Newport, 16 grandchildren, Andy, Aaron (Lisa), Stacy, Megan, Emily, Ryan, Ashley Boettcher (David), Craig, Michelle, Christina, Cody, Janelle and Grant Schneider, Katy Oster, Austin and Logan, 5 great grandchildren, Cason Boettcher, Aden, Meadow, Autumn and Alannah, and a brother-in-law, Ralph Dunbarger of Lowell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet, three brothers, Edward, Charles and Lawrence, and a two sisters, Agnes Ginther and Hilda Dunbarger. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Visitation will be at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. where there will be a Vigil Service at 3:00 p.m. Donations may be made to St. Mary Church Restoration Fund or St. Mary School Foundation, both at 506 Fourth Street, Marietta, Ohio 45750 or to Franciscan Meals, 318 Front Street, Marietta, Ohio 45750.
