Homer Henry Gerken, 89, long time Lowell resident, died Monday, March 22, 2010, in Lancaster. He was born February 2, 1921 in Muskingum Township, Washington County, Ohio to Henry Walter and Ella Bertha Gerhold Gerken. He had worked as a chemical operator at Elkem Metals. Homer was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church in Lowell and was a past member of the Knights of Pythias in Lowell and the Eagles clubs in Beverly and Marietta. He is survived by three sons, Kenneth Gerken (Gracie) of McDowell, KY, Bruce V. Gerken (Janet Burris) of Lancaster and Brian V. Gerken of Columbus; a grandson, Jeremy Gerken (Gwen), and great grandson, Keith Michael, all of Lake City, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn Anna Stengel Gerken; daughter, Judith Ann Gerken; grandson, Keith Gerken; brother, Lloyd and sisters, Laura Zimmer and Irene Anderson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 26, 2010, at the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with Jim Fernihough officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff at Valley View Nursing Home and Dr. Ralph Romaker for their care of Homer.
