Howard S. Gifford, 84, of Marietta, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at Marietta Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born January 25, 1927 in Morgan County, Ohio to Walter and Iva Smith Gifford. He was a 1950 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Engineering, of which he was a big fan. Howard was a U. S. Army veteran of Korea, serving from September of 1950 to September of 1952. As a Civil Engineer, he dedicated 43 years to the design and planning department at ODOT. He was a member of Central Christian Church, having served as deacon and trustee. Also a member of American Legion Post #64. Howard is survived by his three children, Susan Gifford of Marietta, Randy Gifford (Ania) of Chicago, IL, and Betsy Gifford of Lima, seven grandchildren, Santina Rose Plottner (David), Tia and Keri Rose, Sylvia, Randy, Alyssa and Nicholas Gifford and great grandsons, Mason Howard Plottner and Jasper William Gibbs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ardella Ruth Gifford on April 1, 2010, also by a son, Michael Kevin Gifford, a grandson, Billy Rose, and siblings, George, Harry, Fred, Emmet, Martha, Ernestine and Florence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2011, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
