Irene Tokodi

July 30, 1927 — October 15, 2018

Irene Tokodi, 91, of Marietta, went peacefully with the Lord October 15, 2018, surrounded by family.
She was born July 30, 1927, in Banat, Yugoslavia to Stephen and Catherine Budai Szeles. Irene wanted to join the convent until she met her husband, George. She said it was love at first sight. She thought he had the face of an angel. Irene and George married on November 11, 1951.
Irene and her husband escaped communism in Yugoslavia with their son George. They lived in a refugee camp in Italy for two years before they could legally immigrate to the United States. She resided in the Dayton area for many years before moving to Marietta to be closer to family.
Irene enjoyed cooking, baking, and reminiscing with family and friends. She was known for her cabbage rolls, nut rolls, and buckeyes. She made sure no one left hungry in her company. She was a lover of animals, especially her dog Cheppy.
She is preceded in death by her husband, George Tokodi, Sr. She is survived by her son, Dr. George (Chyrl) Tokodi, of Marietta, daughter Irene (Peter) Knudsen of Colorado Springs, several grandchildren, Elizabeth (Allen), Rebecca (Adam), Sarah (Darren), Teresa (Adam), Peter, George (Kelli), and John. As well as 3 great-grandchildren, Mary, Annie and Nathan.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at 10:00a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018 at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday October 20, 2018 at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, OH. The family will greet friends on Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home.
She truly loved the Lord and was a devout Catholic. She prided herself in providing her children with a Catholic education. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to St. Mary Catholic School, 320 Marion Street, Marietta, Ohio 45750.
