Jacqueline (Jackie) Delaat

Jacqueline (Jackie) DeLaat, 66, of Marietta, OH died Friday, April 24, 2009 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born March 19, 1943 in Chicago, IL to Eleanor and Neill DeLaat. She was raised in Chicago and Downer's Grove, IL and went on to study at the University of Iowa, where she joined Alpha Chi Omega and was selected to Phi Beta Kappa. She pursued graduate study at the University of Minnesota, earning a Master's degree in Political Science. Jackie then spent ten years in Washington D.C. working for governmental and quasi-governmental agencies, during which time she developed lifelong relationships within an activist religious community. Returning to academia, Jackie earned her Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy from the University of Pittsburgh and held teaching positions at Waynesburg College, Bethany College, and Marietta College, where she has been teaching since 1988. While teaching at Marietta, she earned the McCoy Teaching Award (among others) and published her book Gender Issues in the Workplace: A Case Study Approach (2008; 1st ed.1999). In the last ten years, she traveled for business and pleasure to Norway, China, Mongolia, Brazil, Mexico, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Dubai, Alaska, Colorado, and New Mexico. When she wasn't off on an adventure, Jackie was often found soaking up the sun at her cottage on Lake Erie. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, serving on local and national church committees. She is survived by her sister, Christine DeLaat, brother, David Williams, husband, R. Michael Smith, and two daughters, Meghan Walt and Michelle Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Steve Mahaffey presiding. All are welcome to greet the family at the family home, 416 Sixth St, in Marietta, between 2 and 6 pm on Friday, May 1.
