James Russell Johnson, 92, of Marietta, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born January 21, 1919 in Washington County, Ohio to Willard and Mary Elizabeth Gadd Johnson. Jim had helped build Ohio Power and retired from farming in 1974. He was a past member of the Epworth United Methodist Church and the Epworth Grange at Pattens Mills,Ohio. He enjoyed gardening and sports, especially his children and grandchildrens' sports. Jim is survived by his wife of 69 years, Opal Lillie Lowe Johnson, they were married on June 1, 1942, also by three sons, Carl R. (Marilyn) of Marietta, Ralph J. (Virginia) of Cleveland and Ray H. (Penny) of Fleming, a daughter in law, Betty Johnson of McConnelsville, ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 13 step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond C. Johnson, a granddaughter, Jessica Johnson, and three brothers, John, Jack and Arthur "Toad" Johnson. Funeral services will be held at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Friday, August 12, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. The family will greet friends on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and also for one hour on Friday, prior to services.
