James Franklin "Jim" Phelps, 64, of Lowell, died Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 14, 1946 in Lowell to John Franklin and Flossie Vivian Burton Phelps. After graduating from high school, Jim joined the Marines, enlisting on November 23, 1965. He was stationed at Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam, and was part of the Third Amphibious Assault Force. Jim was honorably discharged on January 19, 1968. He retired from Big Sandy Superstore in 2007. Jim enjoyed motorcycling, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Linda Binegar Phelps, whom he married on November 16, 1967; two sons, James Phelps Jr. (Stephanie) of Little Hocking and Bryan Phelps of Middlebourne, WV; a daughter, Jennifer Anderson (Joe) of Waverly, WV; three grandchildren, Elizabeth and Michael Phelps and Josie Anderson; two sisters, Roberta Smith (Norman) of Lowell, and Kay Vance (Lowell) of Wooster, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents. Abiding with Jim's wishes, he has been cremated and there will be no services.
