Jane Ellen Mooney, 78, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 27, 2025, at her home in Marietta, Ohio. She was born on April 28, 1946, in Marietta, Ohio to Walter and Martha Jennings Archer. She lived a life full of love, adventure, and dedication to her family and community.
Jane was a proud graduate of St. Mary's High School, Class of 1964. She went on to have a successful career in the finance department with Continental Airlines, where she was known for her meticulous attention to detail and her warm, welcoming spirit.
Jane's life was enriched by her many passions and interests. She was an avid marathon runner, running ten marathons (one for each of her grandchildren). Jane started running marathons in her 50s after beating breast cancer. Her races took her across the country, highlighted by stops in Washington, DC (Marine Corp Marathon), Chicago, California (where they had a grand piano set up at half way point on the PCH), Rock and Roll marathon in Cleveland, and numerous races in Houston.
Working for Continental Airlines made world travelers out of Jane and Chuck and they enjoyed treks through China, Cuba, Germany, and numerous other countries. Jane loved the outdoors and hiking. She hiked to the top of Diamond Head in Hawaii and the length of Big Bend National Park in South Texas/Mexico border and even the Great Wall of China!
There may have been no destination that meant more to Jane than Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. She started going to Ocracoke Island with her parents and siblings in 1962. The family visits grew to include multiple generations who would gather on the beach daily to catch up on each other's lives. Jane continued to travel to Ocracoke until her last trip in 2024.
Jane cherished attending the events of her children and grandchildren, and was always their biggest fan. She joyfully witnessed countless numbers of sporting events and recitals and from 1977 to 2024 could be found in a stadium, diamond, auditorium, gymnasium, soccer field, or concert hall just about every weekend.
Jane is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Chuck Mooney Jr., and their three children: Chuck III (Ashlee), Matthew (Heidi), and Kevin (Lee) Mooney. She was the proud grandmother of ten grandchildren: Jack, Sarah, Cap, Max, Emma, Elise, Katherine, Megyn, Garrett, and Gracen Mooney. Jane is also survived by her siblings: Danny Archer (Erica), Sally Newell (Guy), Nancy Russell, and Bill Archer (Jeanette).
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ann Mullen (Gene).
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with The Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell celebrating. Jane's family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her life and legacy.
