Joan Smoot Hushion, 90, peacefully passed, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. She was born in Parkersburg, WV, on July 9, 1928; was a 1946 graduate of Parkersburg High School; and 1950 graduate of Randolph Macon Woman's College, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
She was a Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church and a long-time substitute teacher in Marietta City schools. Joan was very active in the community; she was past president of the Marietta Welfare League and Betsey Mills Club Women's Board. She was a former member of the Salvation Army Board, Marietta Facade Improvement Committee, Marietta Tree Commission, Marietta Community Foundation and the Smoot Theatre Board. She served on a number of Sternwheel Festival Committees, was a tour guide on the Marietta Tourist Trolley, and was a docent at the Campus Martius Museum. She was a long-time member of the Marietta Tennis Center and the Betsey Mills Book Club. Joan was the Zonta Woman of the Year in 1986.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, John Kent Hushion, Sr.; her oldest son, John Kent Hushion, Jr.; her parents, Fayette and Mary Bryan Smoot (Parkersburg, WV); and most recently, her sister, Betty Dils.
She is survived by her sons Michael (Mary) of Beavercreek, OH and Tom (Teresa) of Marietta, OH; and grandchildren Katie Baum (Joe) of Marietta, OH; Kent Hushion of North Royalton, OH and Christian Hushion of Morgantown, WV.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 8th at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Friday, June 7th from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
