John E. Davis

John E. Davis, 85, of Rock Hill SC (and former longtime resident of Marietta) passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2024 from natural causes. He was married to Helen Davis for 40 years, who passed away on February 26, 2004. He is survived by his son, Joseph; his daughter, Denah; her husband, Don; two cherished granddaughters, Morgan and Madeline; and Morgan’s husband, Graham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Melba Davis and his sister, Susan Scott.

John was born in Boomer, WV, where he lived until the age of 13. The family relocated to Marietta and made their home in Devola. John attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through graduation. After high school, he served in the US Air Force, spending the majority of his military career as a radio operator in Tripoli North Africa. Following his service, John secured a job at Union Carbide Chemical Plant where he filled numerous roles over the many years of his career. He met and fell in love with Helen, and they married on July 1, 1963, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They resided in Belpre, on Harmer Hill and then settled in Devola where they raised their family and had countless friends.

After Helen passed, John stayed in their home for many years. He eventually met Martha McCurdy who became a wonderful companion and part of the family. They enjoyed many good times together.

Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption on Saturday, December 21st at 10am with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell celebrating. Burial will follow in Putnam Cemetery in Devola, where full military honors will be observed. The family and the Catholic Women’s Club will host a celebration of John’s life upon return from the cemetery at about 12 pm Saturday in the social hall of The Basilica.
