Leslie Patrick McGovern
Leslie Patrick ("L. P." or "Pat") McGovern, 82, of Williamstown, West Virginia, passed away April 19, 2013 at his home.
Born June 12, 1930, in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of Leo Leslie and Amy P. (Blanford) McGovern.
As a young man, Leslie attended Miami University and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art but then enrolled at Kent State University and graduated, cum laude, with a double biology/psychology major. For several years he worked as an insurance adjuster. A lifelong learner, he earned a Master's degree in Psychology from University of Akron in 1968 and a Ph.D. from Kent State University in 1973. Teaching courses in Abnormal Psychology and Theories of Psychotherapy at State University of New York, College at Buffalo, during the years of 1972-1978, heightened his interest in clinical psychology. As a result, he pursued post-doctoral training at Pennsylvania State University and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati. As a licensed clinical psychologist, he held supervisory and administrative positions in Clark, Clinton, and Fairfield Counties of Ohio and retired in 1997 from a private psychotherapy practice in Newark, Ohio. He and his wife moved to Williamstown in December of 2000 after living briefly in Georgia.
A reader of wide and deep interests, he was a regular participant in the Today's Issues group of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta, and his letters-to-the-editor frequently appeared in the local newspapers. Throughout his life, he enjoyed sports and music.
Leslie is survived by his wife of 37 years, Martha (Webb) McGovern; his daughters Deborah McGovern of Florida and Leslie McGovern of Texas and their mother Joan (Bennett) Fadely of Texas; his brother Robert McGovern of Ohio; seven grandchildren: Connor Maxwell and Kathleen Maxwell of Florida, Michelle Randall, Kristine McCool, and Sarah McCool of Texas, Sean McGovern and Kevin McGovern of Texas; five great-grandchildren; nephew Michael McGovern, and niece Meghan (Dave) Kondik. He was preceded in death by his son, Lee Bennett McGovern.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. The church is located at the corner of Third Street and Putnam Street.
Donations in his memory may be made to Strecker Cancer Center (401 Matthew Street, Marietta, OH 45750) or the Williamstown Food Pantry (c/o Karen Fenton, 129 East 5th Street, Williamstown, WV 26187).
