Martha Jean Taylor

Martha Jean Taylor, 88, of Marietta, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024, at her home. She was born February 22, 1935, in Coraopolis, PA to Wylie Scott, Sr. and Alice H. Brawley Scott. Martha moved to Marietta in 1950 where she met her husband, Harold “Leroy” Taylor and they married on May 1, 1955. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1986.

Martha was employed by Marietta City Schools as the Middle School secretary for many years. She was also employed by Dr. Robert Rudolph II, after she retired from the school system. She was also a long-time representative of the Longaberger Emerald Basket Branch. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Marietta, serving in various capacities over the years. She was very proud of the work she did in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She was a member of the “Marietta Mad Hatters” Red Hat Society and was the founding member of the Hats of Hope volunteer group that made hats for the patients of the Strecker Cancer Center.

She is survived by three sons; Barry (Darline) Taylor, William (Kathy) Taylor, and Scott (Telah) Taylor, all of Marietta. She is survived by four grandchildren; Joshua (Julie) Grahame, of Marietta, Jeremy (Tyra) Taylor, of Marietta, Seth (Aisha) Taylor of Gillette, Wyoming, and Devan (Alexis) Benjamin of Marietta; and two great grandchildren. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mona Scott, of Massillon, Ohio.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles (Nancy) Scott of Canton, Ohio, Wylie A. Scott, Jr., of Massillon, Ohio, and one sister, Ellinor (Jim) Wallace, of Lowell, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Friends may call at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Homes on Wednesday, January 10 from 4-7pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 11, at 11am at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Homes with an hour of visitation prior to the service with burial to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Strecker Cancer Center Patient Emergency Fund, the Amedisys Hospice Patient Fund through the Memorial Health Foundation, and/or the First Congregational Church Legacy Fund.
