Marvel Joan Smith

August 28, 1932 — September 30, 2024

Marvel Joan (Alloway) Smith, 92, formerly of Lowell, was lifted from this earth by angels on Monday, September 30, 2024, at The Pines at Glenwood Community in Marietta, Ohio.

Joan was born August 28, 1932, to Charles T. and Kathinka E. (Kollman) Alloway in New Matamoras, Oh.

She attended school in New Matamoras and graduated from Stover High School in 1950. Joan worked at National Drug Store and Ohio Bell Telephone Company in Marietta before moving to Charleston, WV where she worked at the Sears Roebuck store.

On December 12, 1953, she met Earl J. Smith at Highland Park in Marietta. They were married August 29, 1954, and lived in Charleston, WV before moving to Lowell.

Joan loved sewing, quilting, baking, and helping Earl raise strawberries, peppers, and garden. Throughout the years, Joan was actively involved with St. John’s UCC and Highland Ridge Church and active in several organizations and community groups.

Joan is survived by and will be greatly missed by her husband of 70 years, daughters; Joyce (Tom) Danford, Marilyn Pottmeyer, Nancy (Brian) Bauerbach, and Earlene (Gene) Watson, grandchildren; Hillary, Hunter, Kate Danford; Cole and Tanner Pottmeyer, Johanna McNabb; Daniel and Matthew Bauerbach, Erica Kolassa and Elizabeth Zenker; Kyle Davis, and Kelsey Watson, step grandchildren; Erika Eddy, Erin Taylor, and Bethany Watson; 18 great grandchildren. Also surviving are brother, Charles (Ingrid) Alloway, sister, Amanda Merkle, sisters-in-law Dorothy Stauch and Carolyn Alloway.

She was preceded in death by siblings Bradley and Neil Alloway, and Carolyn Hayes, several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and son-in-law Jay Pottmeyer.

Funeral services to celebrate Joan's life will be held at the LOWELL CHAPEL OF CAWLEY & PEOPLES FUNERAL HOME, in Lowell, Ohio, on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 10:00 am with Craig Hayes officiating. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, October 3 from 4 to 8 pm. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at The Pines, Amedisys Hospice, and Dr. Brockett for their exceptional care and compassion toward her and her family. Donations may be made to the Highland Ridge Church, 2200 Highland Ridge Rd, Lowell, Ohio 45744.
