Mary Louise Nelson Kendle, age 84, Marietta, departed this life on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at her residence. She was born October 8, 1930 in New Marshfield, OH a daughter of the late Fred Nelson and Dessie Syx Nelson Clark.
Mary graduated from Caldwell High School in 1948. Some of her favorite memories were of band camp and playing the French horn. Mary was a beloved member of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church in Reno, where she was active on several Committees. She had a very strong commitment to God, her family and those close to her. She was always with a giving heart and supported many organizations, especially the veteran's organizations and her church.
She was a very strong and self-determined woman and accomplished her life goal of becoming a nurse at age 42. Through her love of nursing and her compassion for her patients, Mary made a career of being a private duty nurse and caring for many doctors, nurses and families in the Marietta and Parkersburg area. She was a devoted wife, caring mother, devout grandma and great grandma and a caregiver to her brother and sisters during the later years of their life. Mary loved life and had a green thumb for her flower and vegetable gardens, especially her roses. She loved to read autobiographies, knit and was a wonderful cook and baker. She also enjoyed fishing, picnics and sports of all kinds, especially golf. She cherished her opportunity to meet Rory McIlroy at the Memorial Tournament.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Stewart Grimes "Stew" Kendle, whom she married February 27, 1949 at the First Congregational Church in Marietta and who passed February 22, 2009; two sisters Maude Caldwell and Eleanor Sheaks; one brother Adolphus E. "Buster" Nelson; and great grandson Gavin Patrick Clark.
Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters Diana (David) Lawrence of Caldwell, Kathy (William) Taylor of Marietta; one son John F. Kendle of Marietta; four grandchildren, Carrie (Josh) Clark of Sarahsville, OH, Sarah (Doug) Reed and Matthew Lawrence both of Caldwell, and Seth Taylor of Columbus, OH; six great grandchildren Riley and Cullen Clark, Hayden and Paxtyn Lawrence, Earah and Matix Reed; one nephew Ed (Cheryl Eynon) Nelson of New Concord, OH; two nieces Kitty (Rick) Zerger of Caldwell and Lisa (Jim) Pope Senecaville, OH. She is also survived by numerous extended family and friends, especially a childhood friend Bonnie Bailey of Belle Valley, OH.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be observed Friday July 31, 2015 at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Wendy Erb officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park in Reno, OH.
