Mary Scales

Spending much of her life in Marietta, Mary had a life active in politics and charity. She was a member of the Democratic Women's Club, the Child Conservation League, and the Catholic Women's Club. Mary and Robert owned the historic Hilltop Confectionery from the mid-50s--70s, a well-known cafe that sat at the corners of Third, Marion, and Matthew streets.
Mary and Robert were well-respected members of the community and lived noble, fascinating lives. Robert preceded Mary in death in 1964. Once their children were grown, Mary nannied for several families including American Diplomats whom she resided in Bucharest, Romania with for a year. Known to most as "nana," Mary touched the lives of people across the globe. She enjoyed English tea and oatmeal (which she shared with her dog Chloe) each morning, and enjoyed afternoons knitting or spent at the public library. She often spent evenings baking with her great grandchildren, or amused by the antics of her favorite British comedy--Keeping Up Appearances. Nana, an English matriarch of a long and noble lineage, had loving arms, an open door, and the bluest eyes in the family.
Whether nannying for families across the world, or being "nana" at the Devola soccer fields handing out hand knit toboggans to the girls' team, she thrived in all loving roles she took--and that love was reciprocated by all.
The family will have a memorial at a later date. And, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association or to American Veterans Association.
Mary is survived by four children: Mike (Linda) Scales and son James (and fiance Samantha Schmidt) Scales; Patti Scales and son Robert (Brandie) Knotts, and daughters, Nicola (Matt) Westbrook, Emily Knotts, Elizabeth Knotts (and partner Megan Crisler), and our little Ashley Halligan; Arda Scales (and partner Shawn Ann Wilson); Suzanne Corkran and daughter Jennifer (Jason Newborough) Lipscomb, and sons Michael and Charlie Corkran. She is also survived by her brother Robert Warner of London, England, many, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews here and in the UK, and a yellow lab name Chloe who slept next to her every night.
