Mary Virginia Ulmer, 96, of Whipple, died Monday, April 29, 2013, at Heartland of Marietta. She was born March 6, 1917 in Marr to Orlando and Meta Gerber Smithberger. She was a 1935 graduate of St. Mary's Catholic High School. In her younger days, she had worked as a clerk at Otto Brothers, National Drug Store and Nelsons Drug Store. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and the Catholic Women's Club. Mary enjoyed embroidery, reading, puzzles and craft work. She is survived by two nieces, Sarah Handschumaker and Joan Rech; great-nieces and nephew, Martha Handschumaker, Karen Kidwiler, Lila McKitrick, and Mike Rech; several great-great-nephews, a great-great-niece and several great-great-great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Edward Ulmer in 1973, brothers Charles and Bernard Smithberger and a sister, Edith Charleston. Funeral Liturgy, with mass, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Visitation will be at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home from 6-8 pm on Wednesday. There will be a Vigil Service held at 8:00 Wednesday evening.
