Merylin Jane Unger

Merylin Jane Harra Unger, 85, died in Poland, Ohio at Hospice of the Valley at 11:35 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2009. She was born July 22, 1924 in Waterford to Clarence E. and Opal A. Malone Harra. She graduated with the Waterford High School, class of 1942. On December 28, 1944 she married Delbert W. Unger. They were married for 42 years, until his death in 1986, residing in a country home, near Lowell. In addition to raising four children, she was a secretary in Marietta for many years. Upon retiring, she became an active volunteer at Christ United Methodist Church, Washington County Public Library, Pioneer Ladies Civitan, and other Marietta organizations. Merylin is survived by her daughter, Sandra K. Hewitt (Robert) of Youngstown, and her three sons, William E. Unger (Cynthia) of Litchfield Park, AZ, Charles Michael Unger (Linda) of Springfield, and Stephen P. Unger (Susan) of Northridge, CA; three grandsons, and one great-granddaughter, Robert P. Hewitt, Lt. Cmdr. Gregg Unger, Dr. Jeremy Unger, and Kiersten Unger. Merylin's only sister, Fay Lillian Harra, resides in Seattle, WA, and her sister-in-law, Shirley Unger Denhart in Carrollton, GA. Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, are her father in 1930, her mother in 1980, her step father, Herbert E. Ullman in 1984 and her granddaughter, Lori Cathleen Unger in 1978. Visitation will be at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to her services on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, with The Rev. Doug Stockton officiating. Her burial will be at Zion Cemetery in Harriettsville. The family requests contributions in memory of Merylin to the Marietta Public Library, Hospice of the Valley's Hospice House or Christ United Methodist Church.
