Paul Augustine Reid

July 6, 1932 — June 11, 2023

Paul Augustine Reid, 90, of Marietta, Ohio died June 11, 2023. Born July 6, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the youngest child of James and Kathleen (Daugherty) Reid and a loving husband, father, and grandfather, an athlete, coach, lifelong educator, and outdoor enthusiast. After graduating from Shaw High School in Cleveland, he played football at Marietta College where he earned a degree in history in 1954. He pursued graduate studies at Ohio University, obtaining a master’s degree in economics in 1968.

His commitment to education was wide ranging, including directing summer Head Start programs for preschoolers, supervising student teachers at Ohio University, and serving as president of the Marietta City School Board post-retirement. He taught history and government for 10 years (1957-67) at Fort Frye High School in Beverly as well as coached football and served as athletic director. For 20 years (1973-1993), he directed the Career Development Program at the Washington County Career Center.

Paul had a keen interest in history; he knew dates off the top of his head and could explain thought-provoking historic events. This carried over to his sense of humor when entertaining loved ones with his knowledge of classic movies. He enjoyed hiking mountains, canoeing rivers, listening to music ranging from ballads to opera, and driving his Mini Cooper to the beach. He was an early enthusiast for rock climbing in the 1960’s and a bicyclist who enjoyed many century rides.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jane (Palmer) Reid of Marietta, Ohio, and was the father of three sons, Mark Eugene (Gail) of Mountain View, California, Brian Paul (Sally Hair) of Hanover, New Hampshire, and Andrew Conan (deceased). He is also survived by three grandchildren, Eleanor Reid of Hanover, Graham Reid of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Brenna Reid of Monterey, California, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, James M. Reid, and sister, Mary Ellen (Reid) Greener.

A private interment will be observed. In lieu of flowers, consider contributing to the charity of your choice.
