Peggy Wilene (Handschumacher) Brooker, 81, of 350 St. John Road in Marietta (Churchtown), was called Home on July 9, 2019. Peggy was born on February 17, 1938, to the late Tallmadge V. and Edith (Cline) Handschumacher in Lebanon, Ohio.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Churchtown and their Catholic Women's Club. She also belonged to the Betsey Mills Club in Marietta, where she enjoyed being a Warm Water Therapy instructor. Peggy was an LPN, and retired from Marietta Memorial Hospital after a very rewarding career. She began her employment history as a Nurse's Aide at the same hospital, many years ago. She interrupted her career to raise 8 children, then returned to school to fulfill her lifetime dream of becoming a Nurse.
Peggy was a very caring and nurturing person; always there to support relatives, friends, neighbors, and stray pets in times of need. Peggy was a wonderful and loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. She was a marvelous cook and baker, and enjoyed making homemade bread and award-winning pies.
Peggy married Andrew Clement Brooker on July 18, 1957, who preceded her in death August 22, 2013.
Survivors include daughters Carol (Jim) McDonough, of Spring City, Tennessee; Rebecca (David) Klepper of Columbus; Andrea (Greg) Strauss of Waterford; Victoria (Robert) Hanson of Beverly; Lillian Kahrig of Canal Winchester; Melissa (Kevin) McCarty of Canal Winchester; and son Phillip (Karen) Brooker of Camarillo, California. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren: Andy, Jon, Michaela, Jared, Evan, Shannon, Cassie, Levi, Jana, Jessica, Joe, Bethany, Kelsey, Samantha, Alexis, Hope, Joshua, Laura, and Maggie; and 6 great-grandchildren: Roxi, Abigail, Lucas, Scarlett, Melanie, and Logan. She also has 3 step-grandchildren, and 9 step-great grandchildren. Peggy was preceded in death by 3 children, Michael and Katherine, who died at birth, and Constance (Bob) Delancy of Williamstown; one grandson, Matthew; and one step-great grandson, Dylan. She has 3 surviving brothers: Donald (Carolyn) of Newport, Gerald (Betty) of Belpre, and Howard (Cheryl) of Belpre. Siblings preceding her in death include her brothers James, Harry, Charles, Harold Lloyd, Jackie, Dwight, and Hollie; and sisters Ella Stewart, Gertrude Gerken, Mary Jones, and June Williams.
Funeral Liturgy, with Mass is scheduled for 10:00 am Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with The Rev. Timothy Davison celebrating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Peggy's family will be greeting friends on Monday, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 pm.
