Ray Dixon Dennis, 85, of Marietta, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg, WV. He was born December 23, 1923 in Marietta to George and Josephine Dixon Dennis. Ray was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre. He worked for Marietta City Schools in maintenance for 23 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and VFW, Post #5108, and a past member of American Legion Post #64. He loved gardening, woodworking, was a clock maker, and loved helping people. Ray was close to his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Viola F. Schwendeman Dennis whom he married on November 25, 1946; three sons, Bob Dennis (Linda) of Proctorville, Bud Dennis (Mary) of Marietta and Rick Dennis (Brenda) of Reno; a daughter, Darlene Harris (Don) of Marietta; nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, John Dennis (Paula) of Oak Hill, NY and Dwain Dennis of Reno; a sister, Carol Simon (Dean) of Bloomington, IN and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, a brother, Donald and two sisters, Lucille Braden and Garnet Hupp. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with full military honors. Friends may call at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Vigil Service at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
