Richard Athey "Rick" Griffiths, Jr., 66, of Marietta, died Monday, October 7, 2013, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 5, 1947 in Marietta to Richard Athey and Garnet Tilton Griffiths, Sr. He was a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. Rick was a U. S. Navy veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. He retired in 2004 from AMP Ohio, he then drove bus for WASCO/Ewing until he became ill. He was a member of Marietta Moose Lodge #1823, American Legion Post #64, VFW Post #5108, and Fearing Camp #2 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He enjoyed fishing and genealogy. Rick is survived by his wife, Marge Shivley Griffiths, they were married on September 28, 2002; also by his daughter, Melissa Griffiths Erb (Mark) of Marietta and son, Eric Richard Griffiths (Amber) of Marietta. With his marriage to Marge, two sons were added to the family, Scott Townsend (Laura) of Hebron and LarryJohn Townsend of Marietta. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jessica Lamb (fianc, Ryan Cutright), Kaitlin Lamb, Courtney Griffiths, Jordan, Caleb and Konner Townsend, as well as a brother, Bob Griffiths (Carol), of Vienna, WV, his mother in law, Jacqueline Shivley, of Williamstown, WV, and his faithful companion, his dog, Griffey. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Russell Griffiths, and a granddaughter, Alisha Lamb. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Chaplain Bob Sinnett officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williamstown, with full military rites being observed.
