Richard G. Sabol

January 13, 1925 — December 26, 2018

Richard "Dick" Sabol, 93, of Williamstown entered his heavenly home on Wednesday December 26, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by daughters Patty Kripal (Mike), Carol Johnson (Bob), Lisa Rickert (Stuart) and son Richard S. Sabol (Tina) and seven grandchildren Abbey, Josef, Jarad, Clairisse, Sarah, Bobby, Jocelyn and great grandchild Annabelle.

He was born in Raritan, New Jersey on January 13, 1925. Richard attended Bound Brook High School. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Army joining the 16th Armor Division of General Patton's Army during WW II. As a tank commander in Europe he assisted in the liberation of Pilsen Czechloslovakia, a town of his family origin. After his safe return from Europe, he married the love of his life Margaret on August 6, 1950. In 1955 he transferred from New Jersey to the Marietta area with Union Carbide, Polystyrene Division. After a long successful career he retired in 1988 as the Assistant Plant Manager.

He was well beloved in the community. He was an avid fisherman, enjoying both deep sea and fresh water fishing. He liked to bowl and enjoyed woodworking. He was a great pool player well into his nineties with his nickname "Tough As Nails". His steady longshots were legendary. He enjoyed playing water volleyball at the YMCA for over 35 years. More remarkable at the age of 35 he taught himself to play golf, shooting his age or less into his 90th year of life. As a member of St. Mary's Basilica he served as an usher for over 50 years. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion and the Elks. He greatly enjoyed his time spent with his beloved wife of 66 years. At home he was always the life of any family gathering. He taught himself to play the piano and harmonica by ear, entertaining the family and grandchildren with classic tunes, and story telling. Richard's unconditional love for all people will leave a legacy that will be everlasting. He was a devoted spouse, father, grandfather and our family Patriarch. He will be remembered as being a wonderful provider, war hero, a gentle peacekeeper and a loving friend to all.

Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with The Rev. John Michael Campbell celebrating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown, WV. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home.
