Robert Sherman Hill, 89, of Westerville, formerly of Marietta, died Wednesday, March 8, 2017 in Westerville. Born in Washington, DC July 3, 1927, he was a son of the late Robert D. and Dorothy Hilscher Hill.
Following high school graduation in 1945, he served briefly with the Army Air Force. Robert was a graduate of St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, and received his Ph. D. in Political Philosophy from the University of Chicago. Most of Robert's career was spent at Marietta College, in the classroom from 1959-1989 and ten more years as Secretary to the Board of Trustees and as Special Events Coordinator. He had taught in the Learning in Retirement Program at the college.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as long time secretary for the Marietta Reading Club. For forty years Robert sang with the Marietta College Chorale in the annual presentation of "Messiah". Also he helped found, and was an ongoing benefactor of, the River Cities Symphony. He was active in the Washington County Historical Society, with involvement in the Fearing House.
On December 27, 1950, he married Judith Tate. She survives with three children: Amy Shevitz (Norbert Samuelson) of Chicago, David H. Hill (Beverly Upton) of Concord, CA, and Sarah Blotner (Joel) of Westerville; three grandchildren, Hannah Kilburg (Benjamin) and their son Walter, of Towson, MD, Reyan Ali (Elia) of Columbus, Benjamin Blotner of Westerville; and one brother, Russell Hill of Worthington.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marietta, with the Rev. Tom O'Connor officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery. Robert's family will greet friends at a reception at the church immediately following the committal service.
