Robert Joles Terry
Robert Joles Terry, 89, died Sunday, December 14, 2008, at The Arbors, in Marietta, Ohio. He was born in Girard, Pennsylvania on October 12, 1919 to David and Hattie Joles Terry. A certified gemologist and member of the Gemological Association of Great Britain, he retired as vice president and general manager of H.W. Beattie and Sons of Cleveland, after 45 years with the firm. He was graduated with a B.A. and M.A. in history from Western Reserve University. Robert served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the China-Burma-India theatre. He was awarded the Air Medal for at least 25 missions over "The Hump" and the Distinguished Flying Cross for at least 50 missions. He also served in the Air Force in Germany during the Korean War. He taught courses in gemology at the Virginia Marti School of Design and various history courses at Cleveland Community College. A keen amateur actor, he appeared in numerous productions at the Lakewood Little Theatre, Greenville, S.C. Little Theatre, and the Hermit Club. He was a long time member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, and more recently of Lakewood Presbyterian Church. He had been a member of the Cleveland Rotary, Lakewood Kiwanis, Marietta Rotary, Cleveland City Club, the All Twos Club, and the Hermit Club. Robert was a longtime supporter of the Cleveland Symphony and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Janice B. Pellett Terry. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Janice J. Terry, and her husband, Donald R. Burke, of Marietta and sister-in-law, Martha N. Wade of New York City. The family requests that donations in his memory be made to The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Symphony, or The Colony Theatre restoration project in Marietta. Robert's visitation will be at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a private family graveside service in Lake City, PA on Thursday, with full military honors. There will be a public memorial service held on January 17, 2009, at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church, Lakewood, Ohio.
