Rodger Eugene Mendenhall, 89, Marietta, died Saturday, March 24, 2018 at his home. Born November 4, 1928 in Marietta, he was a son of the late Glenn and Gertrude Wible Mendenhall.
He was a 1946 graduate of Marietta High School and a 1952 graduate of Marietta College, where he later served as crew coach from 1953 - 1957. Rodger was a WWII veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy from 1946 - 1948. He had retired from a career in hospital administration, including administrations at Marietta Memorial Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, John R. McGibony Hospital Consultant, Woodside Receiving Hospital (Youngstown), Columbus State Hospital, Highland View Hospital (Cleveland), Cuyahoga County Hospital (Cleveland), Cincinnati General Hospital, The Medical Center (Columbus, GA) and Dayton Mental Health Center.
He was a member of the Gilman Avenue United Methodist Church. Rodger had been very involved in his community, serving on various boards, committees and civic organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gramkow Mendenhall, whom he married December 29, 1973 and by five daughters, Becky and Debbie Mendenhall, Jamie Prunty, Merrilee (Mike) Burton and Peggy (George) Schlicher; two sons, Jeff (Karen) Prunty and Harry (Sandy) Prunty; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren (and one on the way); sister Janet Mendenhall Gault, and her children David and Stacia.
He is preceded in death by his son, Rodger (Rod) Mendenhall.
Abiding with Rodger's wishes, his body has been cremated. There will be a public memorial service held at a time and place to be announced later. Contributions in his memory may be directed to Marietta College Athletic Department (Crew and rowing program), 215 Fifth Street, Marietta, OH 45750.
