Roland Stanley Fredericks

Dr. Roland Stanley "Roly" Fredericks, 93, of Marietta, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at his home surrounded by family. He was born May 15, 1916 in Oak Ridge, NJ to Harry and Clara Sammons Fredericks. He received his BA from Upsula College in New Jersey, his MA and ordination from Union Theological Seminary in New York, and his PhD from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Roly retired from the First Presbyterian Church in Marietta in June of 1981 but continued his ministry until his death. He was a member of the Muskingum Valley Presbytery (former Moderator), Rotary Club of Marietta, Washington County Historical Society, Marietta Ministerial Association, and various peace groups and environmental associations, both national and international. His vision and leadership were instrumental in the founding of the Cato Community Church, Cato, NY, the Fairmount Community Church, Syracuse, NY, the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Belpre, OH, and Washington County Community Mental Health Services, Marietta, OH. Roly is survived by his wife, Margaret Matterson Fredericks, two daughters, Margaret (Peggy) F. Malcomb (Kevin) of Marietta and Elizabeth (Betsy) F. Lattanner (Eric) of Granger, IN, a brother, Harold Fredericks (Alice) of Pearl River, NY, grandchildren, Andrew Lattanner of Washington, DC, Micah Lattanner of Chicago, IL, Nathan Malcomb of Richmond, KY, Leah Lattanner of Telluride, CO, and Jacob Malcomb of Canton, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Edgar and Wilbur and two sisters, Edith Halley and Hazel Dunham. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, OH on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 at 10:30 am, with Richard Hasler and Katherine Hawbaker officiating. Visitation will begin following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial of his ashes will be in Mound Cemetery.
